The mystery of who will play Dev, the powerful antagonist in Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra 2, has finally been solved. According to latest media reports, Ranveer Singh has been confirmed to play the role of Shiva’s father, who wants to possess the Brahmastra and become the supreme power in the universe.
Ranveer Singh, who is known for his versatility and charisma, will reportedly join the star-studded cast of Brahmastra 2, which includes Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, and Mouni Roy. The film will also feature Deepika Padukone as Amrita, the Jal Astra and Shiva’s mother.

Brahmastra trilogy
Brahmastra 2 is the second installment of the fantasy trilogy that began with Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva, which released on September 9, 2023. The film received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, and crossed the Rs 300 crore mark at the box office within a week.
The first film introduced the concept of the Astraverse, a world where ancient weapons of mass destruction are hidden in different elements of nature. Shiva, played by Ranbir Kapoor, is a young man who discovers that he has the power to wield the Brahmastra, the most powerful weapon of all. He is guided by his mentor, Brahma, played by Amitabh Bachchan, and his love interest, Isha, played by Alia Bhatt, to protect the Brahmastra from the evil forces led by Mouni Roy.
The film ended with a cliffhanger, where Shiva learns that his father, Dev, is still alive and is the mastermind behind the attack on the Brahmastra. The film also announced the title of the sequel, Brahmastra Part 2: Dev, and teased the audience with a silhouette of Dev’s character.
Ranveer Singh confirmed to play Dev in Brahmastra 2
While the makers have not officially confirmed Ranveer Singh‘s casting, several reports and sources have claimed that he is the chosen one to play Dev. In fact, film critic Anupama Chopra accidentally had revealed earlier Ranveer’s involvement in the film in a video, where she said, “I hope that the learnings of this film (Brahmastra Part 1) enable them to make a kickass part two with of course Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone.”
Karan Johar, the producer of the film, also had hinted at Ranveer’s presence in the film during an Instagram live session, where he said, “You already have the inside info you don’t need to ask who is playing Dev.”
Now the latest media report in News 18 claims that Ranveer is indeed Dev. A source informed them, “Ranveer has been finalised to play the role of Dev. He has signed the dotted line. The scripting for the second part is still in progress and the film is expected to roll in 2025. Currently, Ayan Mukerji is busy with War 2 and Ranveer will also begin shooting for Baiju Bawra this year. So, when Brahmastra 2 will go on floors is still unclear.”
Ranveer Singh to start shooting Brahmastra 2 post Don 3?
The source adds, “If all goes well, Ranveer will kick-start Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Baiju Bawra mid-2024. While it was decided that the shoot of Brahmastra 2 will begin in early 2025, it is now being said that Don 3 will go on floors at around the same time. In all likelihood, Ranveer will shoot for Don 3 first and then Brahmastra 2.” It was already revealed that Deepika Padukone is playing the role of Amrita, Shiva’s mother in the first part.
Brahmastra 2 is expected to be a bigger and grander spectacle than the first film, with more action, drama, and visual effects. The film will also explore the backstory of Dev and his relationship with Shiva and Amrita. Ayan Mukerji, the director and writer of the film, has said that he has planned the trilogy for over a decade, and that he hopes to release the second film in three years.
