The Justice Hema Committee‘s explosive report on sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry has sparked a significant reaction. In response to these revelations, Maharashtra is set to create a panel to investigate the casting couch culture in Bollywood. This new panel aims to tackle the long-standing issues of sexual misconduct in the industry.
Veteran Actress Asha Parekh Calls For High-Level Investigation
The impending investigation has sent shockwaves through Filmistan. As reported by Bollywood Hungama, veteran actress Asha Parekh discussed it & said, “This must be probed at the highest level. The safety of women at their workplace must be the highest priority for the government.”
A well-known Hindi producer-director, who wished to stay anonymous, voiced frustration with previous efforts. “Some years ago that whole MeToo thing happened in Bollywood. But what was the result? Only the small fish were taken into the net. The really big players include a multi-content tycoon producer and an A-list hero known for his clean image, both of whom paid multi-crores to the accusers to hush up allegations against them. This time the biggest of heads will roll,” the source revealed.
This comment highlights a belief that past scandals only scratched the surface, with major figures escaping accountability.
Tovino Thomas Faces Backlash Over Criticism Of Industry Scrutiny
Amid these developments, Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas’s recent remarks about the scrutiny of his industry have stirred controversy. Thomas expressed “hurt” over the focus on the Malayalam film sector, suggesting it was unfairly targeted. However, his comments have been met with criticism from colleagues.
“A start had to be made somewhere, and Thomas should be happy and proud that the Malayalam film industry has spearheaded MeToo Part 2. Thomas whining about why-us is like saying a crime’s impact is lessened as there are others perpetrating the same crime. For God’s sake this is not kindergarten school. Grow up, and face reality,” one colleague countered.
Despite the controversy, some voices within the Malayalam film industry have supported the move towards greater accountability. Jeo Baby, director of The Great Indian Kitchen, was one of the few to speak out. “All registered complaints should be treated very seriously. Many changes should be brought in the film sector with the support of the state government. I take this occasion to congratulate WCC (Women In Cinema Collective). They have done a great job for the future of Malayalam cinema,” he said.
As the Maharashtra government prepares to take action, the industry braces for further scrutiny and potential shake-ups. The establishment of a new panel promises to bring much-needed attention to the casting couch in Bollywood.
