RGV’s 1998 Cult Gangster Film Satya Featuring Manoj Bajpayee, Shefali Shah & Urmila To Re-Release On THIS Date

Satya, the 1998 cult gangster film by Ram Gopal Varma, is set to re-release in cinemas on January 17, 2025.

Ram Gopal Varma’s 1998 cult gangster classic Satya is making a return to cinemas after 25 years. Starring Manoj Bajpayee, Shefali Shah, Urmila Matondkar, and JD Chakravarthy, the film left a lasting impact on Indian cinema.

The re-release is scheduled for January 17, 2025 )as announced by the filmmaker on his official X account).

RGV Announces Satya Re-Release

Sharing the news, Varma wrote, “SATYA coming back into theatres on a re-release with ALL GUNS BLARING on JAN 17th 2025. The UNDERWORLD is coming into the UPPERWORLD.” 

He also reposted a comment from a film trade expert, highlighting how Satya is among cult films that have redefined Indian cinema.

Plot Details Of Satya

Directed by Ram Gopal Varma and co-written by Anurag Kashyap and Saurabh Shukla, Satya delves into the underworld of Mumbai. It follows the journey of JD Chakravarthy’s character (Satya) who arrives in the city and ends up entangled with a criminal gang led by Bhiku Mhatre, played by Manoj Bajpayee. The film’s gritty portrayal of crime and human emotions resonated deeply with audiences.

The movie also featured a stellar supporting cast, including Paresh Rawal, Makarand Deshpande, Govind Namdeo, and the late Neeraj Vora. Vishal Bhardwaj, who made his debut as a music composer with Satya, delivered iconic tracks like “Sapno Mein Milti Hai,” with lyrics by Gulzar.

Satya is regarded as a landmark in Indian cinema for its realistic portrayal of the underworld. Its success paved the way for a new wave of crime dramas in Bollywood. Despite being 25 years old, the film’s themes and execution continue to influence filmmakers.

Ram Gopal Varma recently directed the Telugu political thriller Vyooham. Talking about Manoj Bajpayee, the actor has been busy with multiple projects. He was last seen in The Despatch on ZEE5 and will reprise his role in the much-anticipated third season of The Family Man, set to stream on Prime Video in 2025.
