Rhea Chakraborty And Her Family Get Big Relief As Bombay HC Quashes LOCs Issued Against Them In Sushant Singh Rajput Case

The Bombay High Court on Thursday quashed the Look Out Circulars (LOCs) issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against actress Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik, and their father Indrajit Chakraborty in connection with the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Manjusha Deshpande allowed the petitions filed by the Chakraborty family challenging the LOCs issued in August 2020. The LOCs were meant to prevent them from leaving the country without prior permission from the CBI, which is probing the case of Rajput’s death.

Court quashed LOCs issued against Rhea Chakraborty and her family

The court observed that the LOCs were issued without following the due procedure and without any material to show that the petitioners were likely to abscond or tamper with evidence. The court also noted that the CBI had not filed any charge sheet against the petitioners till date, despite having ample time to investigate the case.

CBI’s advocate Shreeram Shirsat requested the bench to stay the operation of its order for a period of four weeks so that the agency could file an appeal in the Supreme Court.

However, the court rejected the CBI’s request to stay the order and said that the CBI had failed to show any exceptional circumstances to warrant a stay.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s death

Rajput was found dead in his apartment in Mumbai on June 14, 2020. While the Mumbai police registered an Accidental Death Report and started a probe into the case, Rajput’s father filed a complaint with the Bihar police in July 2020, accusing Rhea Chakraborty and her family of abetting his suicide and misappropriating his funds. The case was later transferred to the CBI by the Supreme Court.

In September last year, the high court granted a temporary suspension on the LOC issued against Showik enabling him to travel abroad.

Rhea Chakraborty and Showik Chakraborty were also arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in a drugs case related to Rajput. They were later granted bail by the Bombay High Court. The NCB has filed a charge sheet against them and several others in the drugs case.
