In a week filled with heightened emotions and a mix of pride and pain, actress Ridhi Dogra is now at the centre of a social media storm. Following the Pahalgam terror attack, her film Abir Gulaal, which stars Fawad Khan, quickly becomes a point of contention that’s escalating online.
Ridhi, however, is refusing to remain silent.
A Kashmiri Voice Taking a Reasoned Approach
Dogra, who is from Jammu & Kashmir, was one of the first voices from Bollywood to publicly denounce the attack, calling it “inhuman and heartbreaking”. But now, she is the target of grief which is now being directed towards her for working with a Pakistani during times of heightened tensions between our neighbouring nations.
And what is her response? Calm. Clear. Composed. But never to be silenced.
“I DID (the film) when my government allowed it. I stand by the penal code. But I also believe that togetherness, grace and harmony, are essential threads of a functional civilization,” she wrote in a dignified rebuttal on X.
“Don’t Waste Your Anger On Me” – A Call For Context in the Chaos
Despite growing calls for a full boycott of any collaborations with Pakistan (and the FWICE bravely going so far as to request cinema owners and producers to think about their distribution plans), Ridhi is drawing a hard line between art and attack.
On social media, she wrote, “I will not stay silent. I am angry too. I’m just choosing to express it differently.”
It’s the kind of statement only an insider can write—someone who has lived through the politics and felt the pain and still thinks cinema must promote both conscience and courage.
What Happens to Abir Gulaal? A Film Stuck in Between
The repercussions are not contained to comment sections. Sources say the Information & Broadcasting Ministry is reviewing the release of Abir Gulaal and simply abstaining from multiplex chains.
What seemed like a Fawad Khan comeback and a cultural take on a political thriller is now in limbo, a victim of the very politics it intended to critique.
BoxOfficeWorldwide Verdict
Ridhi Dogra did not post for attention—she posted for accountability.
And in doing so, she has reminded the industry that silence is not always strength.
Abir Gulaal may or may not make it to theatres. But one thing is clear: the conversations it has sparked off-screen are just as critical as what unfolds on-screen.
