Saif Ali Khan Revisits Cocktail, Says Doing The Film Was An Inevitable Mistake

Saif Ali Khan has taken a brutally honest look at Cocktail, and he is not softening a word of it. Years after the film became a fan favourite, the actor has called doing it “an inevitable mistake” and described it as a “slightly regressive” choice, instantly putting the spotlight back on one of Bollywood’s most stylish relationship dramas.

Saif Ali Khan Calls Cocktail A Mistake

Reflecting on the 2012 film, Saif said, “I did the part because we were producing it, it was an inevitable mistake, 100 percent that was a mistake, and that was a slightly regressive script choice. Otherwise, it was a breezy, fun entertainer.” He then further added, “Saif went on to add, “I didn’t do it for the role; I did it so the film could get made. You do things for various reasons. I knew fully well that the exciting role is the Veronica part but it’s one of those things you do anyway.”

The remark has sparked fresh conversation around Cocktail, a film that remains widely discussed for its portrayal of relationships and the contrast between Deepika Padukone’s Veronica and Diana Penty’s Meera.

Saif played Gautam in the Homi Adajania directorial, opposite Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty. Released on July 13, 2012, Cocktail emerged as one of the notable Hindi theatrical releases of that year and carved out a lasting pop culture identity through its soundtrack, glamour and performances. Even now, it is one of those films that regularly finds its way back into Bollywood conversations.

In the same conversation, the actor, who is currently gearing up for his upcoming thriller Haiwaan, spoke about Sajid Khan’s Humshakals that hit theatres in 2014. Looking back, Saif feels that the problem didn’t lie in the film itself, but in his casting. He added, “I personally think that I was a miscast in Humshakals because it’s not my thing. Certain actors could really pull that off, and you need a kind of commitment and the ability to make people laugh on a very slightly different level, which perhaps I wasn’t able to convince myself to do or wasn’t just basically good enough in it.”

He further said, “I think Sajid expected me to do that stuff…perhaps….like Akshay Kumar could have done it; that was the mistake, but I stand by the movie, and I stand by him (Sajid), and of course, we have to all stand by our movies.”

Why Cocktail Still Gets Revisited

That staying power is exactly why Saif’s latest comment lands so strongly. Cocktail was sold as a glossy, urban love story and clicked with a young audience, but it also left behind a long trail of debate over how its women were written and where the story finally landed. Saif’s blunt reflection gives that old debate a fresh jolt.

The film was directed by Homi Adajania and backed by Illuminati Films, Maddock Films and Eros International. Alongside Saif, Deepika and Diana, the cast also featured Dimple Kapadia, Boman Irani and Randeep Hooda. Its songs, styling and breezy mood helped turn it into a title that still enjoys strong recall more than a decade later.

Saif Ali Khan’s Recent And Upcoming Work

In the past few years, Saif has moved comfortably between mainstream big-screen projects and streaming titles. He was seen in Vikram Vedha in 2022, followed by Adipurush in 2023. In 2024, he made his Telugu cinema debut with Devara: Part 1, adding another industry to a filmography that has continued to evolve in interesting ways.

He also headlined the Netflix heist drama Jewel Thief in 2025, showing his continued interest in OTT space alongside theatrical work. Looking ahead, Haiwaan is among the confirmed titles on his slate releasing today, while Race 4 remains one of the most talked-about franchise projects linked to him. At this stage, Saif’s choices continue to swing between commercial scale and reinvention, which makes his candid reassessment of Cocktail all the more striking.
