Saif Ali Khan has never shied away from expressing his love for books, and in a recent conversation with Esquire India, the actor offered rare insight into the stories that have left a lasting impact on him. One particular novel struck such a strong chord that he went ahead and bought the rights to adapt it into a film.
Saif revealed that he is deeply passionate about stories that are poetic, emotional, and reflective of society and history. His reading choices reveal a pattern of narratives that challenge dominant perspectives and explore layered truths about culture and humanity.
Saif Bought Rights To Black River By Nilanjana Roy
Speaking about a novel that resonated particularly deeply with him, Saif revealed that Black River by Nilanjana Roy is among his most cherished reads. Describing it as far more than a conventional crime novel, he said, “It’s kind of a police procedural murder mystery, but it’s also really emotional and kind of moving about the murder of a very young little girl.”
The story connected with him so strongly that he took the decisive step of acquiring the rights to the book. “I love the story so much that I bought the rights to the book and we’re trying to make a movie out of it,” Saif shared during his conversation.
Adaptation Process Taking Time
While acknowledging that the adaptation process is taking time, Saif remains committed to bringing this story to the screen. He described the novel as “lyrical,” “dramatic,” and “really poetic, beautiful.” The actor emphasized that the emotional weight of the book extends well beyond the mystery at its core.
The challenge with adapting such a layered and emotionally complex book is ensuring that the film captures all the nuances that make the written work special. Saif seems to understand this responsibility and is taking his time to get it right.
Book Is An Ode To India That Might Not Exist Anymore
Quoting the book’s description, Saif added a particularly poignant observation about what makes Black River so special. He said, “It’s kind of like an ode to an India that might not exist anymore… quite an emotional piece as well.”
This description reveals why the story appeals to Saif on such a deep level. It’s not just about solving a crime, but about capturing a moment in time, a version of India that is perhaps disappearing. This nostalgic and reflective quality adds another layer to what promises to be a compelling film adaptation.
Saif’s Love For Well Written Ghost Stories
Apart from Black River, Saif also spoke about his fondness for ghost stories, particularly those rooted in strong literary tradition. One of his favorites is Japanese Ghost Stories by Lafcadio Hearn. Reflecting on the author’s journey from Ireland to Japan and his deep immersion in Japanese culture, Saif said, “I love very well-written ghost stories.”
He noted that Hearn would retell famous Japanese ghost stories “in this amazing, amazing poetic prose,” calling the collection one of his favorite books. For Saif, the appeal lies not just in supernatural elements but in the emotional depth and literary elegance with which these stories are told.
