Salman Khan Defamation Case: Bombay Hc Tells Panvel Neighbour To Delete Posts, Says Social Media Is Not A Licence To Defame

Salman Khan’s long-running Panvel farmhouse dispute has returned to the spotlight, this time with a sharp courtroom reminder about the limits of social media speech. The Bombay High Court has asked the actor’s neighbour, Ketan Kakkad, to consider deleting posts and videos concerning the star, while hearing Khan’s appeal in a defamation suit linked to the property row.

The case stems from comments, tweets and YouTube interviews about Khan’s activities at his Panvel farmhouse. The actor had moved court claiming that the posts were defamatory and communally provocative. After a civil court declined to grant interim relief, Khan approached the High Court.

Bombay Hc Questions Social Media Posts Against Salman Khan

Justice Sharmila Deshmukh, hearing the matter, observed that access to social media does not give anyone the right to publish content that could defame another person, whether the person is a private citizen or a celebrity.

The court’s key observation was direct and firm. “Just because one has access to social media does not mean they can upload videos about any person, whether a common citizen or a celebrity, merely to defame them. Why upload such videos on social media?” Justice Deshmukh said.

The bench also questioned why grievances connected to the property dispute were being aired online instead of being pursued before the appropriate authorities. The court suggested that Kakkad consider deleting the material and posted the matter for further hearing on July 6.

Kakkad owns a property adjoining Khan’s farmhouse in Panvel, located in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai township. He had alleged that the actor violated environmental norms during construction at the farmhouse and blocked access to his property. Khan, in turn, filed a defamation suit seeking removal of the content and restraint against further comments.

What Salman Khan Has Sought From Court

Khan’s plea seeks directions for removal of the videos and posts that he says damaged his reputation. His side has argued that the content goes beyond a private property disagreement and contains false, speculative and inflammatory material.

The High Court’s comments now place the focus on whether online platforms can be used as a battleground for personal disputes when legal remedies are available. For a celebrity of Khan’s stature, the order also underlines how reputational battles are increasingly being fought in digital spaces as much as in courtrooms.
