Sanjay Leela Bhansali Removes Shabana Azmi, Mumtaz’s Roles In His Upcoming Web Series ‘Heeramandi’ 

It marks Bhansali's OTT debut.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the web series “Heeramandi” features Sonakashi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Huma Qureshi and Manisha Koirala. It marks Bhansali’s OTT debut.

The take is placed in the pre-independence time and will revolve around the love and betrayal of the courtesans of Heeramandi of pre-independence times, which exists in Lahore, Pakistan. The latest bollywood news is that Shabana Azmi, Mumtaz’s roles have been scrapped from the film instead of providing the parts to any other or signing any alternative actress.

“They were important but brief roles, and they were written with the two iconic actresses Shabana Azmi and Mumtaz in mind. When Shabanaji and Mumtazji couldn’t do Heeramandi, Sanjay Bhansali decided to scrap the two roles rather than offer the parts to anyone else,” Bollywood Hungama quoted its source as saying.

“The series is being shot on huge sets representing a sprawling kotha. The shooting is taking longer than expected. Sequences that were meant to be shot in one day are taking as much as three days,” its source said.

“Netflix knows about the Bhansali magic. They are fully committed to the project,” as per an insider, further stating Netflix is viewing at Heeramandi as their turning point in India. Its source stated that the platform has complete belief in Bhansali without creating any budget boundaries.
