The emotional drama Sarzameen, which recently premiered on Disney+ Hotstar, has been making headlines for marking the debut of Ibrahim Ali Khan alongside veterans like Kajol and Prithviraj Sukumaran. However, the film is now in the spotlight for a different reason. Co-star Piloo Vidyarthi has publicly shared her candid thoughts on the film, expressing sharp disappointment with how her role was handled and offering a critique of the young debutant’s acting.
In a recent interview, Vidyarthi did not hold back, revealing a challenging experience that left her feeling sidelined and questioning the film’s final cut. Her comments provide a rare, unfiltered look into the post-production process and on-set dynamics.
‘Disappointing’ Role Reduction
Piloo Vidyarthi revealed that her role, a nanny-like figure in the film, was significantly trimmed in the final edit, leaving her disheartened. “They didn’t retain even 20 per cent of what was shot,” she stated in an interview with News18. She described the experience as deeply “disappointing,” especially after preparing extensively for the part, only to see it “reduced to nothing.”
The actor’s frustration was palpable as she explained that the cuts led her to refrain from promoting the film. Summing up her feeling of being caught in a narrative no-man’s-land, she quipped, “beech mein main phas gayi hoon, na Sar hain na Zameen hain (I’m stuck in the middle, there’s neither heads nor tails).”
Critique Of Ibrahim Ali Khan’s Performance
Beyond her own role, Vidyarthi also shared her professional assessment of Ibrahim Ali Khan’s debut performance. While she was quick to praise him as a person, describing him as “very nice,” she was frank about his acting skills. “But I think he needs to have some depth,” she commented.
She elaborated that acting craft is often built on life experiences, suggesting the young star has room to grow. Acknowledging the immense weight of expectation on celebrity children, she added, “Star kids are also under a lot of pressure to live up to their parents. And Ibrahim comes from a family of big achievers.”
On The Film’s Narrative
Vidyarthi’s critique wasn’t limited to just her role or co-star. She also hinted at broader issues with the film’s direction. She felt that “the makers have gone wrong somewhere,” noting that she believed the director, Kayoze Irani, “struggled to piece together the narrative.” This observation provides context to her personal disappointment, suggesting she viewed the issues with her character as part of a larger storytelling challenge within the film.
