Diljit Dosanjh’s Satluj has finally reached audiences after years of delay, landing on ZEE5 Global on July 3 as an uncut release. Inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, the film arrives after a prolonged certification battle that also forced multiple title changes, making its premiere feel less like a routine OTT drop and more like a hard won statement of intent.
Directed by Honey Trehan and produced by RSVP and MacGuffin Pictures, the social drama stars Dosanjh in the lead alongside Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan. The film traces Khalra’s pursuit of justice for more than 25,000 people who disappeared during Punjab’s insurgency era crackdowns, and the personal cost of that fight.
How Satluj Finally Reached Screens Intact
The release carries unusual weight because the film’s road to audiences was defined by resistance. It was first titled Ghallughara, then renamed Punjab ’95 during its certification battle, and has now premiered globally as Satluj.
Trehan said, “We could not get the previous title of the film. The title is now ‘Satluj,’” and added, “This is the complete film, without any cuts or compromises, in its original form as we always intended. It wouldn’t have been possible without Diljit paji and our producers and their will to stand for its integrity. As both Diljit paji and I had previously said, we would not endorse a compromised version of the film.”
When RSVP sought certification in late 2022, the process ended with clearance for 21 cuts and a title change. The decision was challenged in the Bombay High Court, while the film’s planned gala premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival was withdrawn, turning the project into one of the sharpest recent confrontations between filmmakers and the certification system.
ZEE5 Global is carrying the version the makers fought to preserve. Kaveri Das said, “This is a film about courage, resilience, and the fight for justice and it deserves a platform that will stand behind it with conviction.”
For Dosanjh, the film has always been anchored in the legacy of the man he portrays. He said, “Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra ji’s martyrdom and his contribution to humanity were the primary reasons I chose to be a part of this film. I felt a strong sense of responsibility towards the film and was committed to portraying such an inspiring character with truth, honesty, and utmost respect.”
That personal commitment also explains why Satluj lands at a particularly revealing moment in Dosanjh’s screen journey, where mainstream fame and more searching roles have increasingly begun to overlap.
Diljit Dosanjh’s Career Momentum Beyond Satluj
Satluj fits neatly into Dosanjh’s recent move toward more layered and emotionally demanding work. Alongside his star power in Punjabi and Hindi entertainment, he has increasingly taken on roles with stronger historical, musical and dramatic weight.
That run includes Jodi in 2023, followed by a busy 2024 with Crew, Amar Singh Chamkila on Netflix, and the blockbuster Punjabi sequel Jatt & Juliet 3. In 2026, he was also seen in Main Vaapas Aaunga and Border 2. Together, those titles reflect a career phase where Dosanjh has moved confidently between commercial crowd-pleasers and more substantial performance-led films, with Satluj standing out as one of the most politically charged projects on that list.
