Diljit Dosanjh‘s Satluj has landed in the middle of a high stakes controversy just days after arriving on ZEE5 and then vanishing from the platform in India. After years of delays, title changes and courtroom attention, the Honey Trehan directorial is now facing a fresh challenge, with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting alleging that the film was released online without completing the mandatory certification process.
Ministry Flags Satluj’s Ott Debut
The latest flashpoint is the film’s digital release itself. An official from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said, “Satluj did not have the required certification for a theatrical release. Instead of complying with the certification process, the makers changed the film’s title and released it on an OTT platform on Friday.”
The ministry has alleged that this release breached the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Officials have also stated that no representation was received from the filmmakers seeking approval or reconsideration before the movie was made available online. That allegation has now placed the film’s release strategy under intense scrutiny.
Panjab 95’s Title Change Became The Latest Front In Its Censorship Battle
Originally titled Panjab 95, the film is inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who investigated alleged illegal disappearances and mass cremations during Punjab’s militancy years. The project was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification in 2022, where it quickly became one of the most contested titles in recent memory.
The board initially recommended 27 cuts along with a title change. The matter escalated further when the revision committee recommended around 120 cuts, pushing the film into a prolonged legal and creative deadlock. After that extended battle, the project finally surfaced on ZEE5 as Satluj on July 3, carrying the weight of a release that had already become a larger conversation about censorship and artistic freedom.
Zee5 Pulls The Film As Its Immediate Future Turns Uncertain
The situation shifted again within 48 hours of the premiere. ZEE5 confirmed that the film had been withdrawn for viewers in India, saying, “In light of the current developments, Satluj will be unavailable in India until further notice. We remain committed to exploring every appropriate avenue through due process to bring the film back to our audiences at the earliest opportunity.”
That update leaves Satluj in limbo just as it had finally reached audiences after a long and bruising journey. Directed by Honey Trehan, the film stars Diljit Dosanjh alongside Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan, and is backed by RSVP Movies and MacGuffin Pictures. Built around Khalra’s story, the film now stands not only as a politically charged drama but also as the latest test case in the uneasy relationship between certification, streaming and the release of sensitive cinema in India.
