Shah Rukh Khan was once in the running for Ghamasaan, but Tigmanshu Dhulia has now revealed why the film never moved forward with the superstar. Speaking during the promotions of the film, the director said Shah Rukh was his first choice for the part that is now being played by Pratik Gandhi, but the actor declined after a candid conversation about the kind of cinema he wanted to do.
Why Shah Rukh Khan Passed On Ghamasaan
Tigmanshu said he had narrated Ghamasaan to Shah Rukh Khan soon after completing the script. Recalling that meeting, he shared that SRK told him, “I don’t do realistic films.” The remark neatly explains why the collaboration did not materialise, even though Dhulia had initially imagined Shah Rukh in the role.
The revelation adds an intriguing layer to Shah Rukh’s career choices. Over the years, he has often balanced romance, drama and spectacle, but in the last few years he has leaned decisively into larger scale mainstream entertainers. Dhulia’s recollection suggests that Ghamasaan, with its grounded tone, simply did not align with the actor’s instincts at the time.

Ghamasaan’s Release Is Now Around The Corner
While Shah Rukh did not come on board, Ghamasaan has moved ahead with Pratik Gandhi and Arshad Warsi leading the cast. The film is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and is scheduled to premiere on ZEE5 on September 11, 2026. The project has drawn attention for bringing together Dhulia’s gritty storytelling voice with two performers known for very different screen energies.
That contrast is part of what makes Dhulia’s latest anecdote stand out. It is not a story about a fallout or a missed opportunity wrapped in drama. Instead, it feels like a clear creative mismatch, one that was acknowledged honestly and early.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Shah Rukh Khan’s last full scale feature releases came in 2023, when he delivered Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki in the same year. The three films marked a major commercial resurgence for the actor, with Pathaan and Jawan reinforcing his command over action driven spectacle, while Dunki saw him step into a socially rooted drama with Rajkumar Hirani.
Since then, Shah Rukh has had no new theatrical feature release, making his next film one of the most closely watched Hindi cinema events on the calendar. His confirmed upcoming project is King, which is currently in post production and is listed for 2026.
The film has generated strong interest as it pairs him with Suhana Khan and marks another big screen action vehicle in his current phase. Dhulia’s recollection about Ghamasaan now fits even more sharply into that trajectory, showing how deliberately Shah Rukh has shaped his recent screen image. Incidentally Arshad Warsi will be seen with Shah Rukh in King in a cameo.
