In an industry where star vehicles often get reshaped around their biggest names, Amol Palekar’s latest memory from Paheli lands with unusual clarity. The director has revealed that Shah Rukh Khan came on board, acted, produced, and still did not interfere with the script, preserving the film’s original written design from start to finish.
Amol Palekar On The Script Shah Rukh Khan Did Not Alter
Speaking on Kindlecast, Palekar looked back on the making of the 2005 fantasy drama and said the screenplay remained the film’s anchor throughout. Adapted from Vijaydan Detha’s story, Paheli starred Rani Mukerji as Lachchi, a young bride whose life changes when a ghost takes the form of her husband, both roles played by Shah Rukh Khan.
Recalling the process, Palekar said, “The script which was narrated and given to Shah Rukh, not a comma of that was changed.” He also pointed to the star’s support behind the camera, saying Shah Rukh stepped in whenever the unit needed something urgently during production.
That trust in the written material, Palekar suggested, made the experience remarkably smooth for him as a director. “My job as a director was very easy. Very easy,” he said.

Palekar’s recollection was not limited to the script. He also spoke about the distinct strengths each of his lead actors brought to the set, and how that balance helped the film find its rhythm.
Praising Rani Mukerji’s approach, he said, “Rani is a very instinctive actor.” He described Shah Rukh as both an accomplished performer and “a thinking person.”
He added, “When you have such a combination with you and even Amitabh Bachchan to support all that, so, for me, it was very very easy and very simple to get things done from them because the base was our script.”
Those remarks also illuminate why the film is still remembered so fondly. Palekar’s emphasis is not on spectacle or scale, but on the kind of creative alignment that allowed the cast and script to work in step.
