Indian cinema will take the spotlight at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. From March 7 to April 19, the museum will present “Emotion in Colour: A Kaleidoscope of Indian Cinema” – a special film series celebrating India’s storytelling through colour.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Devdas, DDLJ & 10 Iconic Indian Films To Be Screened
The showcase will feature 12 iconic films, including Devdas, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Mother India, Amar Akbar Anthony, and Jodhaa Akbar. The selection spans decades, genres, and regional industries, reflecting India’s diverse film history.
The event will explore the role of colour in Indian cinema and how it shapes visual storytelling and emotions. From historical epics to feminist narratives, the lineup highlights the evolution of Indian filmmaking.
Curator Shivendra Singh Dungarpur stressed India’s deep connection with colour and cinema. He noted that beyond Bollywood, regional industries like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Bengali produce thousands of films yearly. He sees this as a chance to showcase India’s storytelling diversity to the world.

The screenings will include Manthan, Ishanou, Kummatty, Mirch Masala, Kanchenjungha, Maya Darpan, and Iruvar, each offering a unique glimpse into India’s culture and artistic vision.
The event kicks off with Mehboob Khan’s Mother India on March 7. Highlights include Devdas on March 22, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge on March 30, and Jodhaa Akbar on March 31. The series wraps up with Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar on April 19.
