Shahid Kapoor’s ‘aapki bolne ki aukaat honi chahiye’ Remark On Criticism Sparks Backlash On X

Shahid Kapoor has found himself at the center of a fresh social media storm, this time over a sharply worded comment about who gets to criticise whom. The actor, who has often spoken about staying unfazed in the age of instant opinions, is being called out online after a clip from his recent interview began circulating, triggering a wave of backlash on X.

The pushback has been swift, with many users reading his words as dismissive, even elitist, especially in an ecosystem where celebrity visibility and audience scrutiny move in the same breath.

The Comment That Set Off The Backlash

During an appearance on The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra Season 3, Shahid addressed how internet anonymity has changed the way people speak about actors and their work. In the conversation, he spoke about maintaining calm while facing opinions and trolling, while also stressing that not every comment deserves equal weight.

“Aapki bolne ki aukaat honi chahiye, tabhi mooh kholna chaiye… Pehle aap dekho ki aap kitne paani mein ho, phir baat karo,” Shahid said, adding that he was taught this approach since childhood. He also underlined the balance he tries to keep, saying one should be open to “constructive criticism” while also staying positive and backing oneself.

Online, it was the “aukaat” portion of the quote that landed the hardest. As the clip spread, several users argued that audiences who buy tickets or stream content have every right to an opinion, regardless of social standing. Others accused the actor of being out of touch with the very public that powers stardom, with some calling the remark “entitled” and “far from reality.”

The conversation has also reignited an old debate Bollywood repeatedly faces: where to draw the line between valid critique of performances and the increasingly personal nature of trolling that spills into actors’ private lives.

Shahid Kapoor’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Shahid’s recent run has been packed with big-ticket releases and headline-making announcements. In the last 48 months, he led the Amazon Prime Video series Farzi (2023), marking his major OTT debut and earning strong traction for its fast-paced crime thriller setup.

On the film side, he starred in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024) opposite Kriti Sanon, a theatrical release that registered as a commercial success. He followed it with Deva (2025), an action thriller directed by Rosshan Andrrews, where he shared the screen with Pooja Hegde.

Most recently, he appeared in Vishal Bhardwaj’s O’Romeo, alongside Triptii Dimri, Tamannaah Bhatia and Avinash Tiwary. Looking ahead, Shahid is also set to feature in Cocktail 2, directed by Homi Adajania, with Rashmika Mandanna and Kriti Sanon. He has also confirmed work on Farzi 2 with creators Raj and DK, returning to the counterfeit crime universe that made the first season such a breakout.
