After 20 years of friendship, Shahid Kapoor and Jackky Bhagnani are finally looking at the possibility of sharing a professional win. But Bhagnani is not interested in rushing into a film that exists only on paper. The producer has made it clear that if he and Shahid come together, the project has to feel right, especially at a time when the actor remains one of Hindi cinema’s most closely watched stars for both his choices and reinventions.
Bhagnani summed up their current equation candidly. “Shahid and I want to do something together. We feel that while we have been friends for 20 years, we can come together strongly as a professional team. But until we find that correct opportunity, we won’t. We are actively looking for something to collaborate on,” said the actor-turned-producer.
The Ashwatthama Idea That Didn’T Move Ahead
The update carries extra weight because Bhagnani also addressed the fate of Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues, a project that had sparked interest the moment it was announced. With Shahid attached and the title hinting at a mythological action spectacle, the film had all the ingredients of a headline-grabbing launch.
In early 2024, this plan had almost come to fruition. Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment and Prime Video had announced their ambitious film, Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues, as part of the streamer’s slate. However, it was soon heard that the project was shelved.
When we mentioned this to Bhagnani, he shared, “There were multiple reasons why we decided against it. [One being that] Kalki 2898 AD [2024] came after that. When you make a big-scale film, the audience doesn’t judge you on the basis of the amount of money you have spent on it, but on how unique your content is. If it’s not unique, that money goes down the drain.”
This time, Bhagnani did not leave the shelving open to interpretation. He pointed directly to the creative concern that stopped the film from moving ahead, citing concerns over originality.
That makes the duo’s current search for a new film even more significant. Rather than pushing ahead with a mounted idea that no longer felt fresh, they appear to have chosen patience. In an industry where scale often becomes the selling point, the decision suggests both are waiting for a film that can justify the excitement around their first proper collaboration.
Why Shahid’s Current Run Makes This Team-Up Worth Watching
That patience also comes at an interesting moment in Shahid’s career. He has spent the past few years moving confidently between streaming and theatrical releases, which makes any new collaboration feel less like a routine signing and more like a strategic next step. If Bhagnani and Shahid do lock a film together now, it will arrive at a point when the actor is still actively reshaping his screen image.
Shahid led Bloody Daddy, which premiered on JioCinema in June 2023, before returning to theatres with Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya opposite Kriti Sanon in February 2024. He followed that with Deva, directed by Rosshan Andrrews and co-starring Pooja Hegde, which released in theatres on 31 January 2025. His digital run has also stayed in focus through Farzi, a title that remains central to his OTT phase.
More recently, Cocktail 2 arrived in theatres on 19 June 2026, pairing him with Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna. His filmography listings also place O’Romeo among the titles associated with his upcoming slate. That mix of romance, action, streaming success and star-driven theatrical fare is precisely why a future Bhagnani collaboration now carries more intrigue than ever.
