Shantaram Is Happening But Is Amitabh Bachchan Still It’s Part?

While Apple is planning to bring a ten-part web series on Gregory David Roberts’ best selling novel. It is yet not clear whether Big B is a part of it or not.

The book is about an Australian fugitive making a new life for himself in the slums of Mumbai. The series has been acquired by Apple Inc. Hollywood actor Charlie Hunnam will play the titular character who has an epic cultural adventure in Mumbai while hiding from the law.

The novel which is based on the life of its author was first offered to Mira Nair almost 20 years ago as a feature film with Johnny Depp as a producer. It was then observed that Joel Edgerton and Amitabh Bachchan will be playing important roles. However, Mira went out of the project and the directorial onus fell on Garth Davis who directed the Oscar-winning film, Lion, but the latter too opted out.

Now according to the new information, the project has finally gone to Apple, and technically. After all the chaos the question arises whether Amitabh accepts the project especially when the shoot will not happen in Mumbai, the city where the story is located.
In 2007 in an interview, Mira said, “Alas, we have been stalled temporarily due to the crippling nature of the writers’ strike in Hollywood. Johnny Depp assures me that this is just a pause and that we’ll start again once the strike is resolved. I’ve spent a year of creative endeavor in realizing Shantaram, so I look forward to the time when it will all come together.”

The cast will also feature Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma.
