‘She Said I Want to Be Destroyed’: Mahesh Bhatt Opens Up About Love Journey with Soni Razdan; Tells About Overcoming Stigma As An Illegitimate Child

The filmmaker revealed that he did not have happy memories of his relationship with Parveen Babi

Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt recently opened up about his personal life and the struggles he faced in a conversation with Arbaaz Khan on his chat show ‘Invincibles’. Bhatt talked about his relationships with yesteryear diva Parveen Babi and his current wife, Soni Razdan.

The filmmaker revealed that he did not have happy memories of his relationship with Parveen Babi, whom he had an affair with while he was married to Kiran Bhatt. He described his time with her as “traumatic” and spoke about the feeling of sin that came with their extramarital relationship.

Bhatt later fell in love with Soni Razdan and married her. However, he initially resisted the relationship and even warned her that he would destroy her. To his surprise, Soni responded by saying that she was ready to be destroyed. This conversation later became a dialogue in Bhatt’s film Raaz.

Bhatt also shared about his childhood and how he was stigmatized as an “illegitimate child” due to his mother being a Muslim and his father being a Hindu. He spoke about how his mother had to conceal her identity and live like a Hindu, wearing a saree and adorning a tika. Bhatt also recounted how he had to face bullying and attacks until he embraced the truth about his birth and his father’s absence.

Despite the challenges he faced, Bhatt went on to become a successful filmmaker and even managed to overcome his struggles with alcoholism. He shared a heartwarming story about his first income at the age of 15 or 16, which was Rs 53. When he proudly brought the money to his mother, she told him that she would keep it close to her heart.

Bhatt’s candid conversation about his personal life sheds light on the struggles he faced and how he overcame them. It also provides a glimpse into the inspiration behind his films, which often mirror his personal experiences.
