Sholay The Final Cut Goes Through Censor Again: 3 Hour 29 Minute Re-Release Features Original Climax And Deleted Scenes

Sholay is re-releasing as Sholay The Final Cut, featuring the original climax and two deleted scenes that audiences will see on the big screen for the first time ever. The film has been restored in 4K with the original 70mm aspect ratio of 2.2:1, and the sound has been restored using the original sound negative preserved by Film Heritage Foundation. This promises a fine cinematic experience for fans old and new.

Since the film has added three new scenes, the makers had to go through the censor process again. The Central Board of Film Certification saw Sholay The Final Cut on November 24, 2025 and passed it with a U certificate. Thankfully, no cuts were enforced. The length of the film, as mentioned on the censor certificate, is 209.05 minutes, which means Sholay The Final Cut is now 3 hours 29 minutes and 5 seconds long. The original 1975 version was around 190 minutes or 3 hours and 10 minutes long. Director Ramesh Sippy was originally forced by the then CBFC and government to change the ending during the Emergency period.

The Original Ending Is Back

The original ending featured Thakur, played by Sanjeev Kumar, killing the villain Gabbar Singh, played by Amjad Khan. In 1975, during the Emergency, director Ramesh Sippy could not argue too much and had to shoot a changed climax at the last minute. The new ending showed police arriving and stopping Thakur, which was a typical ending used in every film at that time. Sippy revealed that the CBFC officials stressed that Thakur should not be taking the law into his own hands. Now, decades later, audiences will finally see the director’s original vision.

Dialogue Change Controversy And Exhibitor Concerns

The re-censor process has led to fears among fans that the team behind Sholay The Final Cut have tampered with the film’s dialogues. Last week, fans were left angry when the trailer revealed that James Bond was replaced by Tatya Tope in a crucial dialogue. Even Javed Akhtar, who wrote the dialogues along with Salim Khan, protested this shocking change.

Meanwhile, exhibitors are gearing up for a crowded December with unusually long films. The first three weeks of December will see three films with more than 3 hours runtime arriving one after another. It started with Dhurandhar, which has a runtime of 3 hours and 34 minutes. Sholay The Final Cut is 3 hours and 29 minutes long, and Avatar: Fire and Ash has a length of 3 hours and 17 minutes. Exhibition sources say this is the first time three films back to back have such lengthy runtimes, and next week will be a challenge when they have to accommodate both Avatar: Fire and Ash and Dhurandhar.
