This Independence Day, cinemas are bracing for a box office logjam as three major films release on August 15: Stree 2, Vedaa, and Khel Khel Mein. Exhibitors are fuming over what they see as an illogical decision that will likely cause chaos.
Theatres face a tough situation as they try to balance showtimes for the three films. With no new releases scheduled for August 23 or August 30, many are calling for at least one film to shift its release date to avoid the clash.
Exhibitors FUMING Over Stree 2, Khel Khel Mein, Vedaa & More Releases On Aug 15
According to a report from Bollywood Hungama, exhibitors are worried that the simultaneous release will divide the audience’s attention and reduce the earnings of all three films. They fear that distributors might pressure them into giving more shows to one film, potentially leaving the others with fewer slots.
Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi warns of a “bloodbath” if all three films go ahead as planned. He notes that with no releases scheduled for the following weeks, the films will split available screens, impacting their overall success. Rathi believes it’s unfair to expect theatres to support all films equally in such a crowded market.
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal likens the situation to a gamble, comparing it to a high-stakes game of teen patti. He suggests that producers should consider delaying their releases to ensure a full week of showcasing, rather than splitting the audience across three films.
Exhibitor Warns Three Films Together Will Dilute The BO Potential
Vishek Chauhan, who runs Roopbani Cinema in Bihar, describes the scenario as “completely uncalled for.” He argues that releasing three films in one week will dilute their box office potential. Chauhan highlights that even though there were fewer releases earlier in the year, films like Munjya performed well. He fears that the distributors will exert undue pressure, leading to a chaotic weekend for theatres.
Chauhan also speculates that the film industry might be reacting to upcoming OTT platform mandates, pushing for early releases ahead of Dussehra. However, this only adds to the confusion for exhibitors.
Single Screen & Multiplex Struggles
Single-screen theatres are expected to face the most significant challenges, with the need to accommodate all three releases potentially disrupting their advance booking systems. Multiplexes with fewer screens will also struggle to manage show allocations among the competing films.
Rathi and Chauhan both argue that the best solution would be for one film to move to a later date. This would allow the remaining films to benefit from a more focused audience and better box office results.
Exhibitors are concerned about a potential revenue loss and damage to future business if the situation is not resolved. Rathi expresses frustration over the lack of pragmatism in the industry, fearing that the problems will persist until a serious crisis forces change.
On the brighter side, the Hollywood film Alien: Romulus is scheduled to release in India on August 23, possibly due to the competitive environment. Additionally, August 15 will see other releases, including Double iSmart and Thangalaan. Ravi Teja’s Mr Bachchan might also be released on the same day, though its Hindi version is yet to be confirmed.
With so many films competing for attention, cinemas are in for a turbulent Independence Day. The hope is that one film will shift its release date, easing the strain on theatres and ensuring a better experience for all.
