Aamir Khan‘s highly anticipated return to the silver screen with Sitaare Zameen Par has created good buzz, and rightly so, with good numbers at the box office. The film, at the outset, is estimated to have made a first-day collection for its run between ₹10.70 crore, steadily seeing growth from morning to evening across urban centres (All India all India language total is 11.70 crore net).

Urban Multiplexes Lead
The national chains PVRInox and Cinepolis have contributed nearly ₹6.75 crore combined for day one, accounting for around 65% of the total business. These numbers show fair collections for a film in the slice-of-life sports-drama genre but notably modest compared to historical Aamir Khan openers.
Nevertheless, the new realities of post-COVID cinema viewing compared to before, particularly with emotional, non-commercial dramas, render a fair opening that sets up for the weekend.
Encouraging Saturday Advance
There is even more reason to feel positive as Sitaare Zameen Par ends the weekend in good shape with decent advances for Saturday. At the time of writing, on Friday at 5:30 PM, PVRInox itself has already sold over 40,000 advance tickets for Saturday, a whopping 70% increase from the same time on Friday. Cinepolis has another 10,000 advance tickets sold, giving way to anticipated increased Saturday collections of around 60%–80%.
If these trends continue, the film could land in the ₹16–18 crore range on Saturday and possibly continue a 20% growth on Day 2, Sunday, to land the film in the mid-to-late ₹45–50 crore range for the opening weekend.
Word of Mouth and Occupancy Growth
The film, which is directed by RS Prasanna, also appears to have benefitted from positive initial word-of-mouth, with audiences endorsing the emotionally candid story and the performances by Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh. Evening and night show occupancies have shown some growth, and based on this, the film could end up with good legs, primarily in the family-dominated metro multiplex circuit.
The narrative of an unlikely basketball coach mentoring kids that live with some intellectual disabilities appears to resonate.
Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par has taken a fair start—slightly under his pre-Covid highs—but nonetheless it is on firm ground for this genre, which is inherently nuanced and niche. The focus now is the Saturday & possible Sunday spike.
If the growth over the weekend matches the early indicators, this emotional drama could become a word-of-mouth success and a slow-burn theatrical success, like Taare Zameen Par and Dangal.
