Bollywood’s Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, is known for doing things differently, and his style as a producer is no exception. Comedian and actor Vir Das, who is making his directorial debut under Aamir’s production, recently shared some fascinating details about the superstar’s hands-on approach to filmmaking.
Vir revealed that he approached Aamir personally, believing he was the only producer who would understand his film’s unique vision. “Three years ago I called Aamir Sir, and I was like, ‘So I have a movie, and if you don’t produce it, I don’t think anyone will,'” Vir recalled. What followed was a thorough and demanding process that shows just how deeply Aamir gets involved in the projects he backs.
The 72-Hour Pitch And Six Narrations
Most people would be nervous pitching to Aamir Khan, but Vir Das had to do it within a 72-hour window. And that was just the beginning. Before Aamir gave the green light, Vir had to go through a total of six script narrations. This shows Aamir’s intense focus on getting the story and script absolutely perfect before moving forward.
According to Vir, Aamir is completely involved in the development and concept phase. He believes this intense focus on the story from the producer “really benefits your writing as well.” Once Aamir was satisfied with the script, he still had one more test for the first-time director.
The ‘Bare-Bones’ Test Shoot
In a very smart move, Aamir Khan gave Vir a small amount of money and a simple instruction: “Go out and shoot four scenes.” The catch was that this test shoot had to be ‘bare-bones’. “Shoot it on a cell phone… I just want to see how you move the camera, how you use an actor,” Aamir told him.
The team nervously prepared a 12-minute clip, expecting a long discussion and feedback session. However, after watching the footage in his screening theatre, Aamir’s response was a simple and decisive, “Alright.” Just like that, the film was greenlit. Vir also mentioned that once the main shooting began, Aamir left them completely alone and didn’t show up again until the editing stage.
The Big Question: Is There A Cameo?
Of course, with Aamir Khan producing a film, everyone wants to know if he will make a special appearance. When asked about a possible cameo, Vir Das gave a playful and mysterious answer, keeping the suspense alive. “I am telling you that you will have to see the edit,” he said.
