SS Rajamouli On AI: Why The Varanasi Director Still Does Not Trust Generative Tools

In an industry racing to figure out how much of filmmaking can be handed to machines, SS Rajamouli is refusing to blur the line between efficiency and authorship. The director behind some of India’s biggest screen spectacles says AI can save enormous time behind the scenes, but when it comes to actual creation, he is not ready to surrender the filmmaker’s chair.

Rajamouli Draws A Line On Generative AI

Speaking to students at Georgia University, Rajamouli said AI has already proved useful in research and preliminary work, particularly during the early stages of development. He said, “It’s difficult to predict where AI is heading because the technology and its applications are evolving rapidly. So far, AI has been a fantastic assistant for research, R&D and preliminary work. Tasks that once took weeks or months can now be completed in hours or even minutes.”

He followed that with a more pointed note of caution. “When it comes to generative AI, I remain skeptical,” Rajamouli said. He also clarified how he is approaching the technology right now, saying, “At present, we are using AI primarily as an assistant and are not relying on it for digital or generative filmmaking processes.”

For a director whose films are closely associated with scale, visual design, and technical precision, that measured stance stands out. It suggests Rajamouli is willing to embrace new tools where they improve workflow, while keeping the act of cinematic creation firmly in human hands. That philosophy becomes even more interesting when viewed against the demands of his next giant canvas.

Varanasi Is Rajamouli’s Next Big Screen Event

Rajamouli is currently working on Varanasi, a global action-adventure film scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027. The film stars Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and has already emerged as one of the most closely watched Indian productions on the international calendar.

With expectations running high around the project’s scale, Rajamouli’s comments on AI offer a glimpse into how he wants to build that world. Even on a film mounted at this size, he appears determined to use technology as support rather than as a substitute for performance, emotion, and directorial intent.

Ss Rajamouli’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Rajamouli’s last feature film as director was RRR, which released in theatres in 2022 and went on to become one of the defining Indian blockbusters of the decade. Led by Ram Charan and Jr NTR, the film expanded his global profile and remains the benchmark against which his next move is being measured.

In 2024, Netflix released Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli, a documentary exploring his creative journey and rise as a filmmaker. The same year also brought RRR: Behind & Beyond, a documentary that revisited the making of RRR. His next confirmed directorial release is Varanasi, which marks his first feature after RRR and one of the biggest Indian theatrical events currently lined up for 2027.
