Stree 2 Director Amar Kaushik On Concerns Of Item Number Overshadowing Film’s Message: ‘Agar Main Bhajan Ki Tarah Bolunga Toh…’

Amar KausAmar Kaushik believes item numbers can convey meaningful messages in films like Stree 2 while maintaining entertainment value.

Director Amar Kaushik is taking a fresh approach with an item number in his latest film, Stree 2. The song “Aaj Ki Raat” features feminist undertones, which Kaushik believes can enhance the film’s message. He acknowledges that item numbers often receive criticism for objectifying women, but he feels they can serve a purpose when done right.

Stree 2 Director Amar Kaushik Believes In Song With Clean & Meaningful Lyrics

Kaushik explained his vision during a recent media interview. He explained how a “masala film with an item song” can still maintain thoughtful content. “When you make a big-budget film, you need to deliver a full package,” he said.

However, he believes it’s crucial to be clear about the film’s intent. “One must be aware of what one wants to say,” he added.

He recognised that audiences enjoy item songs but wanted to ensure they fit within the film’s narrative. “There’s no denying that people come to theatres to watch item songs.

However, I wanted to ensure it served the storyline without compromising on quality or respectfulness. Logon ko lagta hai item song hai toh gande bol hi hone chahiye but I was clear that while the song should be entertaining and fit the film, it should have meaningful lyrics,” he said. Kaushik’s previous works, such as Bhediya and Bala, reflect his commitment to quality storytelling.

Kaushik’s directive was straightforward: avoid vulgarity. “Let’s not go below the belt because that’s not what the film is about,” he stated. He believes that while the lyrics should be engaging, they should also carry a deeper message. “When you hear the lyrics, you should feel that it conveys a significant point,” he explained.

On Whether He Was Concerned About An Item Number Overshadowing Film’s Message

When asked about concerns that the catchy tunes and vibrant visuals might overshadow his message, Kaushik replied, “Agar main isiko bhajan ki tarah bolunga toh koi sunega bhi nahi.” He believes that those who want to understand will grasp the message, while those who don’t may never connect.

In Stree 2, the narrative explores the conflict between traditional patriarchy and modern ideals. Kaushik noted, “Each of my films carries a message. I always ask myself, ‘What does this story convey? Why should people watch it?’” He recalled how the first part ended with the line, “O Stree Raksha Karna,” and highlighted how women in Chanderi adapted to modern technology.

Kaushik pointed out that there are still men who resist change. “I call people with such mindsets ‘sarkata’,” he said. The film subtly addresses this issue without making it the central theme, as he believes overtly preachy messages often fail to resonate with audiences.
