Sunny Deol’s Safar Skips Direct To OTT Route, Set For Theatrical Release By Year-end

In his next venture, Sunny Deol will veer away from his signature big-screen action roles, which we saw him in recent films like Gadar 2: The Katha Continues (2023) and Jaat. Once set for an OTT release, the actor’s next film, Safar (a working title), will now be in theatres before year’s end.

Sunny Deol calls Safar one of his best performances

As per a report in Mid Day, rumour has it that Deol’s conviction that this is one of his finest performances to date played a role in the decision. Shashank Udapurkar’s Safar casts the actor in a role as a family man who decides to spend his life helping others.

Sunny Gets Thumps Up From Industry Colleagues

A reliable source informed the tabloid that Deol has shared Safar with numerous of his close friends, such as Rahul Nanda, Abbas-Mustan, and Rajkumar Santoshi. All of them have been quite complimentary, with many speculating that it will have the same effect on him that Satyakam (1969) had on his father, Dharmendra. The source went on to say that a few months back, the OTT release of Safar was ready to go, but Deol was persuaded by his friends to choose the theatrical route instead.

For Deol, whose best work as of late has been action-packed stories, the release is a huge step forward. Safar also starring Simran Bagga, will test his appeal in a drama setting.

The actor’s desire for the film to reach a larger audience led him to choose a theatrical distribution. Based on the source’s information, the marketing plan, publicity strategy, and release date will be determined by the producers and Sunny once he returns from the US this week. They plan to release it in either November or December.

Rumours suggest that Deol is keen to participate in the entire marketing campaign for the film. Making sure the film receives the proper amount of theatrical push requires planning the release strategy.

Safar is set to premiere in late 2025. It will be fascinating to see whether audiences embrace Deol in a more subdued and emotionally charged role, as he deviates from his typical action persona. The actor seems to have faith in the film’s impact and thinks it warrants a group viewing experience, since he is moving it from OTT to the big screen.
