Krishna Kishore Singh, the father of the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, has filed a plea to stop the online streaming of the film “Nyay: The Justice”, which is said to be inspired by his son’s life. The Delhi High Court will hear his plea on February 12, 2024, after rejecting his earlier request to halt the movie’s broadcast in July and facing his appeal against the decision in August.
The film, directed by Dilip Gulati and produced by Sarla A Saraogi and Rahul Sharma, was released on an OTT platform in June 2021.
Krishna Kishore Singh had filed a suit in March, seeking a permanent injunction to restrain the defendants from using his son’s name, caricature, lifestyle, or likeness in any of the projects or films. He had claimed that the film violated the personality rights associated with Sushant Singh Rajput and also infringed his right to privacy, reputation, and dignity.
According to an IANS report, a division bench comprising Justices Yashwant Varma and Ravinder Dudeja has granted time to all concerned parties to submit their replies in the matter. In August, a two-judge bench comprising Justices Varma and Dharmesh Sharma had sent notices to several people, including the filmmakers, who were named in Singh’s complaint for allegedly exploiting his son’s death for their own profit.
Justice C. Hari Shankar, in his ruling as part of a single-judge bench, stated, “The information contained, and shown, in the impugned film, is entirely derived from items which featured in the media and, therefore, constitute publicly available information. In making a film on the basis thereof, it could not, therefore, be said that the defendants had violated any right of Rajput, much less of the plaintiff [his father].”
The order of the single-judge bench has been challenged by Krishna Kishore Singh before a division bench of Justice Yashwant Varma and Justice Ravinder Judeja, which issued a notice to the filmmakers and sought their response.
Sushant Singh Rajput, who was 34 years old, was found dead in his Mumbai apartment on June 14, 2020. His death sparked a nationwide controversy and several investigations by different agencies. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is still probing the case.
