Sushmita Sen, the former Miss Universe and Bollywood actress, recently opened up about her experience of working in the 2004 blockbuster Main Hoon Na, directed by Farah Khan and starring Shah Rukh Khan. In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Sushmita revealed that Farah Khan had apologised to her after watching the final edit of the film, as she felt that Sushmita’s role was ‘barely there’ compared to the other actors.
Sushmita’s Role Was Brief But Powerful
Sushmita played the role of Chandni Chopra, a chemistry teacher and Shah Rukh’s love interest in the film. She said that she agreed to do the film because she trusted Farah Khan, who was making her directorial debut. She also said that she was not bothered by the length of her role, as she believed that it was ‘small but powerful enough’. She added that she was surprised by the response of the audience and the industry, who appreciated her performance and screen presence.
Shah Rukh Improvised Her Iconic Introduction Scene
Sushmita also shared how Shah Rukh improvised her iconic introduction scene in the film, where he opens his arms upon seeing her walk towards him in a red saree. She said that she was shivering and stammering during the scene due to her attire, while Shah Rukh wore a warm sweater. She said that Shah Rukh came up with the idea of opening his arms to make her feel comfortable and confident. She said that it was a ‘beautiful gesture’ from him.

Yash Chopra Praised Sushmita And Changed The Posters Of The Film
Sushmita also recalled how the late filmmaker Yash Chopra called her after watching the film and praised her for her work. She said that he told her that he could not take his eyes off her and hoped that she was in every frame of the film. She said that she was touched by his words and felt honoured. She also said that the posters of Main Hoon Na across Mumbai were changed after the release of the film, to feature her along with Shah Rukh, instead of Zayed Khan and Amrita Rao. She said that this was the power of the audience, who wanted to see more of her on screen.
Sushmita said that Main Hoon Na became a career-defining film for her, as it showed her versatility and talent as an actor. She said that she was grateful to Farah Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and the entire team for giving her such an opportunity. She also said that she was proud of being a part of such a memorable film, which is still loved by many people.
