After receiving widespread acclaim, the craze for making biopics in Bollywood is on the rise. Recently, filmmaker Ketan Mehta has expressed interest in filming a movie about Usha Mehta, a freedom warrior. According to sources, the period drama will be produced on a large scale and will be Ketan’s most important production. The National Award-winning filmmaker is now working on the script’s final draught and has began pre-production. Ketan is attempting to reconstruct the city of the 1930s and 1940s, like Usha Mehta did in the past. The world-building process is being overseen by the historians who supported the filmmaker with script creation.
According to a source, Ketan’s team has contacted well-known art directors and is undertaking a recce of South Mumbai, particularly Colaba and Fort, where much of the action will take place. The director also hopes to begin shooting indoor sequences in the first quarter of 2022. After that, the crew will travel to Madh Island or Virar, where they will construct huge sets in the manner of the 1930s and 1940s. According to the source, Ketan is meticulously analysing every detail, from the fabrics to the automobiles, to guarantee that everything is historically correct. A good deal of visual effects will be used as well.
For the uninitiated, Ketan Mehta is Usha Mehta’s nephew, and he wants to make a film on the Gandhian who helped build Congress Radio. The film will also highlight her role in the establishment of the underground radio station in 1942, as well as her imprisonment at Yerawada Jail, according to a source from the unit. With the help of a number of first-hand experiences from his aunt and her personal diaries, Ketan is developing the crux of the plot.
When it comes to the cast, the director wants Taapsee Pannu or Bhumi Pednekar to play the titular part. After the second lockdown, the actors will be busy with their own jobs, so the final casting will be decided by November.
