A 2015 breakup song is beating fresh releases on Spotify India, and the reason goes far beyond nostalgia. Agar Tum Saath Ho from Tamasha has surged to the top as the platform’s most streamed Indian song, giving one of Hindi cinema’s most enduring heartbreak tracks a striking new chapter in 2026. Just as the song claims that milestone, AR Rahman has shared that its final version came only after four attempts.
Rahman opened up about the creative process behind the track and explained why the team kept returning to it. “It’s a song people can universally relate to because we all go through problems and need a shoulder to lean on. ‘Lean on me’ was the brief. Once we got the song, we knew we had something special,” he said.
AR Rahman On How The Song Finally Fell Into Place
The composer said the first few versions did not capture the emotional tone the scene required. “Initially, I felt the melody was light-hearted. The second one was more classical. So, I felt we should do something, which is universal and simple. We finally got it right [the fourth time],” he said.
Rahman also pointed to the singers as a crucial part of the song’s lasting impact, crediting Alka Yagnik and Arijit Singh for bringing depth and ache to the composition. Their vocals turned the track into something deeply felt, not just beautifully arranged.
In Tamasha, the song appears at one of the film’s most fragile emotional moments, when Tara asks Ved to confront what he has been suppressing. That placement gave Agar Tum Saath Ho a narrative force that stayed with audiences long after the credits rolled.
Why Tamasha And Its Music Still Hold On
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Tamasha starred Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone and released in 2015. Produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the romantic drama followed Ved and Tara through a relationship shaped by identity, performance, and emotional conflict. Over time, the film built a devoted afterlife among viewers, with Rahman’s soundtrack becoming one of its strongest legacies.
That is what makes the current Spotify milestone feel so significant. It is not simply a throwback moment for one beloved song, but a reminder of how strongly Rahman’s compositions can outlive the moment they were created for.
From Amar Singh Chamkila To Tamasha’s Streaming Revival
The renewed love for Agar Tum Saath Ho also fits neatly into Rahman’s continuing creative run. In 2024, he scored Amar Singh Chamkila, reuniting with Imtiaz Ali for music that stood out for its rooted energy and period texture. His next Main Wapis Aaunga brings back hit team of Imtiaz Ali, Rahman, Diljit Dosanjh and Irshad Kamil. That collaboration reinforced how instinctively the composer and filmmaker build songs around emotional turning points, rather than just melody.
Seen in that light, the return of Agar Tum Saath Ho to the top of Spotify India feels perfectly in character for Rahman’s body of work. More than a decade after Tamasha, the song is still finding listeners, still hitting the same nerve, and still proving that the hardest-won compositions often last the longest.
