Thalapathy Vijay, who has spent the last two years straddling superstardom and a full-fledged political plunge, is now facing his biggest test off-screen. As the Karur rally stampede continues to cast a long shadow over Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has asked the actor-politician to appear for an enquiry connected to the case.
The development comes at a time when Vijay’s public meetings have remained under intense scrutiny, with crowd management and safety protocols becoming a flashpoint in the state’s fast-heating pre-election atmosphere.
Latest Update: CBI Calls Vijay For Enquiry In The Karur Stampede Case
The CBI’s move follows the deadly stampede that broke out on September 27, 2025, during a political rally in Karur district linked to Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The incident left dozens dead and over 50 injured, triggering a wave of outrage and demands for accountability.
In a message posted on X in the immediate aftermath, Vijay wrote, “My heart is broken; I am in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow,” while offering condolences to families of those who died and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
Police had earlier registered a criminal case against TVK leaders after the tragedy, and the investigation has since widened with central agencies stepping in. The CBI summoning Vijay for enquiry marks a significant escalation because it places the party’s top face directly in the investigative frame, even as political rivals continue to use the tragedy to attack his campaign momentum.
For Vijay, the situation also carries a reputational risk beyond politics, given the scale of his fan following and the optics around mass gatherings that traditionally surround him.
Thalapathy Vijay’s Recent And Upcoming Work
On the cinema front, Vijay’s last few years have been dominated by event films that reinforced his box office pull. He starred in Beast (2022), followed by Varisu (2023), and then Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo (2023), which emerged as one of the biggest Tamil hits of the decade.
In 2024, Vijay headlined Venkat Prabhu’s The Greatest of All Time, a high-concept action entertainer mounted as a major theatrical spectacle.
Looking ahead, Vijay’s next confirmed film is his 69th project, widely known as Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth. The film has been positioned as a significant milestone in his career as he continues to balance screen commitments with his political roadmap.
