Thalapathy Vijay’s highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan has been postponed to Pongal 2026. Originally set for an October 2025 release, the shift makes it one of the biggest festival releases of the year.
Directed by H Vinoth, this film holds extra significance as Vijay’s 69th project and possibly his last before fully stepping into politics.
The hype around Jana Nayagan has been unreal since its announcement. On Republic Day 2025, the first-look posters set the internet ablaze.
One featured Vijay taking a selfie with his supporters, while another showed him gripping a whip, teasing a politically charged role. Fans have been buzzing, especially as the film reflects his real-life political transition.
Thalapathy Vijay Starrer Jana Nayagan Undergoes Major Date Shift
Initially, Jana Nayagan was planned for an October 17, 2025 (Diwali release). However, the makers have now confirmed the new date – January 9, 2026.
Announcing it with a striking poster of Vijay, they wrote, “Adiyum othaiyum kalanthu vechu vidiya vidiya virundhu vecha.. #JanaNayaganPongal 09.01.2026 #JanaNayaganFromJan9.”

Notably, this is the first time in years that a Vijay film has been pushed from its initial release date.

The film boasts an impressive lineup. Vijay is joined by Bollywood’s Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Narain, and Prakash Raj in key roles.
Anirudh Ravichander is on board for the music, marking another exciting collaboration with Vijay. With Sathyan Sooryan handling cinematography and Philomin Raj leading the editing, Jana Nayagan promises to be a high-quality production.
The exact plot is under wraps, but buzz suggests Jana Nayagan will be an intense political thriller. Vijay is expected to play a mass leader pushing for social reform, blending action and activism.
The shoot kicked off in October 2024 with a song sequence in Chennai and has been moving across multiple locations.
