John Abraham is set to bring a gripping political thriller to the big screen with The Diplomat, but not without some final tweaks. Inspired by the real-life 2017 repatriation of Uzma Ahmed, the film has undergone screenings by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ahead of its release on 14 March.
The CBFC has now asked the makers to include a disclaimer affirming their commitment to maintaining good relations with neighbouring countries.
The Diplomat Screened At MEA For THIS Reason
Sources reveal that the MEA’s screening was conducted to ensure that the film’s portrayal of international diplomacy did not negatively impact India’s relations with Pakistan. The CBFC’s requirement for a disclaimer was part of this effort.
An insider told mid-day, “Considering the film is centred on international diplomacy, a visual and an audio disclaimer was added to emphasise that while the core matter may be inspired by a true incident, its portrayal of geopolitical tensions is dramatised and does not reflect the Indian government’s stance. The film is set in Pakistan. It was important to highlight this aspect since the two countries’ relations are a sensitive matter.”
CBFC Has Allowed The Use Of Real Names With Few Modifications
The CBFC has allowed the use of real names, including Uzma Ahmed’s. Additionally, the film references key figures such as former Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Indian officials JP Singh and Prashant Jadhav, with relevant documentation submitted for authenticity.
However, a few modifications were required before certification. They include trimming down a scene involving a young boy killing a woman and muting an expletive to comply with guidelines.
About The Diplomat
Directed by Shivam Nair, The Diplomat follows Indian diplomat JP Singh, played by John Abraham, as he leads a high-stakes rescue mission. The story revolves around Uzma Ahmed (played by Sadia Khateeb) who sought refuge in the Indian Embassy in Islamabad after claiming she was forced into marriage at gunpoint. The film also stars Revathy, Sharib Hashmi, and Kumud Mishra in key roles.
Unlike John Abraham’s usual action-heavy roles, The Diplomat showcases him in a different light. This time, he plays a character who relies on intelligence and strategy rather than brute force. Backed by T-Series, JA Entertainment, and other top producers, the film explores the power of diplomacy over conflict, making it an intense and thought-provoking watch.
