Some actor-director pairings feel irresistible even before a frame is shot, and Imtiaz Ali with Fahadh Faasil was one of them. That is exactly why the confirmation around The Idiot of Istanbul lands as a genuine disappointment: a Hindi project that carried the promise of a rare creative collision has now officially been shelved.
Ali confirmed the development at the Jagran Film Festival in Mumbai, drawing a firm line under a collaboration that had intrigued cinephiles ever since he first spoke about it. Even in closing the door on this film, he left one reason for optimism: his interest in working with Faasil has clearly not faded.
Imtiaz Ali Confirms The Film Has Been Shelved
Ali said, “I want to work with Fahadh Faasil. We tried to do one film together but the project did not materialise. We are in touch with each other, and I think that, ‘dono taraf hai aag barabar lagi hui’. At some point of time, I will have the pleasure of working with Fahadh.”
For a project that had lingered in conversation for a while, that remark finally settles its fate. More importantly, it frames The Idiot of Istanbul not as a fallout, but as a film that simply never found its way to the floor despite mutual interest from both sides.
The Film Had Been In Discussion For Some Time
What makes this update sting a little more is that Ali had spoken about the film with visible affection even earlier, when he described it as something he had been trying to make for a long time rather than a passing idea.
At the time, he had said, “It might not be my next film, but yes, I have been trying to make this film for a long time. It is called The Idiot of Istanbul.”
He had also added, “Yeah, I would love to do this; I plan to make this film with Fahadh. But when it will happen… that’s not really confirmed. We have to figure it out, it might not be the next one.”
Read now, those comments trace a clear chronology. The film was real, the intent was strong, but the uncertainty around timing and execution never lifted. Had it moved ahead, it would have marked Faasil’s first Hindi-language film as a leading man, which only adds to the sense of a missed moment.
Fahadh Faasil’s Recent And Upcoming Work
That missed moment matters because Faasil remains one of the most exciting actors working across South Indian cinema, and a full-fledged Hindi lead turn under Ali could have opened a fascinating new chapter. Instead, his 2026 slate has continued to build elsewhere. He starred in Don’t Trouble The Trouble, his first Telugu film as a lead, and was also seen this year in Idhayam Murali and Patriot.
His recent run had already gathered strong momentum with 2024 releases like Aavesham, Vettaiyan and Bougainvillea, films that reinforced both his range and his pull across industries. As of October 2026, his next confirmed leading project is Karate Chandran, which began production this month. That keeps Faasil in a busy, high-interest phase, and also leaves the door open for Ali to find another story worthy of this collaboration if the timing finally aligns.
