The much-anticipated release of The Legend of Maula Jatt in India has hit a major roadblock. Starring Pakistani actors Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, the film was set to release in Indian cinemas on October 2.
However, recent reports reveal that the release has been stalled, and it won’t be hitting Indian screens as planned.
Here’s Why The Legend Of Maula Jatt Release Has Been Stalled
The reason for the halt stems from a long-standing political issue. Since 2019, Indian films have been banned in Pakistan, and this has now affected the release of Pakistani films in India.
The Legend of Maula Jatt was set to be the first Pakistani film to release in India in over a decade, raising hopes for a cultural crossover. However, political tensions and opposition have derailed those plans.
One of the strongest voices against the film’s release in India has been the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Ameya Khopkar, President of the MNS Cinema Wing, made it clear that the film would not be welcomed in India.
Speaking to ANI, he said, “We will not entertain any Pakistani film or actors in India.” Khopkar went on to state that the MNS would lead protests if the film were to be screened, calling for a nationwide boycott of the movie. “Our soldiers are dying… Why do we need Pakistani actors here? Don’t we have enough talent?” he questioned.
He further added, “This should be taken as a threat… How can one even think of watching movies with Pakistani actors?” The MNS’s opposition is rooted in the ongoing political and military tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly along the border.
The ban on Pakistani artists working in India dates back to the aftermath of the 2016 Uri attack, after which tensions escalated. Despite legal challenges to lift the ban, the Indian Supreme Court dismissed a plea in 2023 that sought to allow Pakistani artists back into Bollywood.
About The Film
The Legend of Maula Jatt is a modern remake of the 1979 Pakistani classic Maula Jatt. The film centres around the legendary rivalry between Noori Natt, portrayed by Hamza Ali Abbasi, and Maula Jatt, played by Fawad Khan. The original movie is a beloved piece of Pakistani cinema, and this remake has generated a lot of buzz, especially because of its star-studded cast.
Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, who are the lead actors in The Legend of Maula Jatt, are no strangers to Indian audiences. Fawad made his Bollywood debut in Khoobsurat (2014) and later appeared in popular films like Kapoor & Sons (2016) and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016). Mahira Khan starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Raees (2017), marking her Bollywood debut.
Although hopes were high for a cultural exchange between India and Pakistan with the release of The Legend of Maula Jatt, it seems the film’s journey to Indian screens is far from smooth.
