A fight over legacy Bollywood music rights has now turned into a full scale courtroom clash, putting a valuable film catalogue and decades of commercial exploitation under the spotlight. Tips Music Limited has publicly pushed back after learning of a suit filed by Puja Entertainment (India) Ltd. before the Civil Judge, Senior Division, in Katihar, Bihar, making it clear that the company considers the disputed rights firmly its own under long standing agreements.
The dispute centres on the commercial exploitation of film music and underlying intellectual property linked to titles from Puja Entertainment’s catalogue. In its statement, Tips said it is the “lawful owner of the music rights in question, supported by valid and binding agreements between the parties,” and added that it has “openly and legitimately exploited these rights for nearly three decades in full compliance with applicable laws.”
Tips Fires Back Over A Three Decade Rights Claim
Tips’ response came after Puja Entertainment secured interim protection from the Katihar court in proceedings involving alleged unauthorized use and exploitation of its film and music related intellectual property. The music label has forcefully rejected both the accusations and the broader suggestion that its use of the catalogue lacked legal backing.
In the statement, Tips said, “The claims made by PEIL are strongly disputed and appear to be malicious, misconceived, and intended to tarnish the reputation and goodwill of Tips.” It further added that the company “remains fully confident in defending its rights before the appropriate courts and shall take all necessary legal steps to protect its interest and ownership of rights.”
That language leaves little room for ambiguity. Tips has framed the lawsuit as a direct challenge to rights it says it has exercised lawfully, publicly, and continuously for nearly 30 years. The label’s position also signals that the dispute is headed for a sustained legal contest rather than a quiet settlement.
Why This Catalogue Clash Matters Beyond One Lawsuit
Publicly available reports on the court proceedings indicate that the matter concerns rights linked to a set of Puja Entertainment backed films and their associated music assets.
