Toaster Release Date Out: Rajkummar Rao, Sanya Malhotra Lead Netflix’s Dark Comedy Premiering April 15

A wedding gift, a collapsing marriage and one man’s obsessive mission to reclaim a toaster are now at the centre of Netflix’s next Hindi original film push. The streamer has fixed April 15, 2026, as the premiere date for Toaster, the Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra-led dark comedy that turns a petty domestic trigger into a full-scale spiral.

Directed by Vivek Das Chaudhary, Toaster follows a miser whose life begins to unravel after the toaster he gifted at a wedding becomes the object of a desperate chase. The film is positioned as an ensemble-driven comedy with crime, confusion and personal chaos colliding in the fallout.

A Wedding Gift Sparks Netflix’s Wildest New Hindi Comedy

Netflix’s date announcement also sharpened the film’s identity as a talent-heavy, personality-led release. Alongside Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra, Toaster features Archana Puran Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, Farah Khan, Upendra Limaye, Vinod Rawat, Jitendra Joshi and Seema Pahwa, giving the project a crowded and distinctly comic ensemble.

The film also marks Patralekhaa’s debut as a producer under the banner Kampa Film, with Rajkummar Rao also attached as producer. Patralekhaa described the move into production as a meaningful milestone and said the team was drawn to the film’s ability to find humour in the most unexpected places. That instinct is clearly central to Toaster, which is selling itself less as a conventional comedy and more as a tightly wound chain reaction triggered by something hilariously trivial.

The story and screenplay are by Parveez Shaikh, with additional screenplay by Akshat Ghildial and Anagh Mukerjee, while dialogues are by Ghildial. With its unusual setup and broad supporting cast, the film already looks designed to lean into escalating awkwardness rather than neat, feel-good punchlines.

Why Rajkummar Rao’s Current Run Makes Toaster Stand Out

For Rao, Toaster arrives after a stretch that kept him active across sharply different genres. In 2024, he starred in Srikanth, Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, the blockbuster Stree 2 and Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. In 2025, he followed that with Bhool Chuk Maaf and the theatrical release Maalik. That recent run makes Toaster notable because it continues his pattern of moving between mainstream titles and character-led material without losing his appetite for oddball concepts.

That matters for a film like Toaster, where the central joke depends on emotional conviction as much as comic timing. The setup is absurd on paper, but Rao’s recent choices suggest he is still interested in stories that ask him to play desperation, vanity and vulnerability all at once.

Sanya Malhotra Brings Fresh Momentum Into Toaster

Malhotra’s recent work gives the film another strong layer of interest. She drew appreciation for Mrs., which released on ZEE5 in February 2025 after its festival run, and also featured in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari in 2025. Her current phase has been defined by roles that combine restraint with emotional sharpness, which makes her presence in Toaster especially intriguing.

Placed opposite Rao in a film built on escalating chaos, Malhotra enters Toaster at a moment when she has already shown she can anchor stories with a distinctive tonal balance. That makes the pairing feel timely rather than merely novel, and it gives Netflix a dark comedy fronted by two actors whose recent career turns have only deepened audience curiosity around their choices.
