Sohum Shah’s Tumbbad 2 Mounts An Ambitious Expansion With 200-Plus Day Shoot Plan

The world of Tumbbad appears to be getting far bigger, and far more elaborate, the second time around. After the 2018 film cemented its place as one of Indian cinema’s most admired fantasy horror titles, and then found renewed commercial life through its 2024 re-release, the sequel is now moving ahead with signs of a serious production push.

Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that Tumbbad 2 is being planned as an extensive production, with the makers eyeing a shoot schedule expected to stretch beyond 200 days. That level of commitment points to a demanding, long-form shoot for the sequel, which is being mounted by Sohum Shah Films in collaboration with Pen Studios.

A Bigger World Is Taking Shape For Tumbbad 2

The latest development builds on the official momentum already surrounding the film. Tumbbad 2 has been announced as a collaboration between Sohum Shah Films and Dr. Jayantilal Gada’s Pen Studios, with production expected to begin in 2026. Sohum Shah had earlier said, “The script is ready, took us six years to perfect it. We cracked the idea with massive difficulty to ensure it does justice to Tumbbad’s world.”

That update also puts the spotlight on Pen Studios’ role in shaping the sequel’s next phase. Led by Dr. Jayantilal Gada, the banner has backed large-scale films including RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi, lending added weight to Tumbbad 2 as it moves toward production. Sohum Shah had also said about the collaboration, “I have looked up to Jayantilal Gada ji’s work for many years. When I met him to discuss Tumbbad 2, within just five minutes he locked the deal. It’s the kind of faith every storyteller dreams of.”

Why Tumbbad Still Holds Its Power

That confidence is rooted in the legacy of the first film. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, with Adesh Prasad also credited as co-director, Tumbbad starred Sohum Shah alongside Jyoti Malshe and Anita Date. Set against a rain-drenched, cursed landscape, the film fused folklore, horror and a pointed meditation on greed into a world that felt wholly its own. Over time, it became a cult favorite, admired as much for its atmosphere and visual precision as for its mythic storytelling.

Its 2024 re-release brought the film back into theatres and reminded audiences just how singular that universe remains in the Indian genre space. With Adesh Prasad now attached to direct the sequel, Tumbbad 2 carries forward a key creative link to the original. For a story built on dread, temptation and ancient darkness, that continuity gives the next chapter a strong spine. If the sequel preserves the unsettling texture that made Tumbbad unforgettable, the franchise may be preparing to haunt the big screen all over again.
