Sohum Shah’s cult classic Tumbbad has made a dramatic return to cinemas today, facing off against the new release, The Buckingham Murders, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan. The re-release aims to build on the film’s growing reputation and perform better than its initial run.
In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Sohum Shah opened up about his early struggles and the role Shah Rukh Khan played in shaping his career.
Tumbbad Star Sohum Shah INSPIRED By Shah Rukh Khan
Shah revealed that Shah Rukh Khan’s influence was pivotal in his decision to pursue acting and filmmaking. “Because of Shah Rukh Khan, I felt that on the surface there’s something that makes you start. I saw Revolutionary Road with DiCaprio and Winslet. The character felt suffocated from a small town, which mirrored my own feelings,” Shah explained.
He described his rapid rise from zero to hero in the industry over six to seven years. He stated that despite material success like car, house and money, he felt a lack of satisfaction and a deep need for expression and exploration.
Shah added, “I used to be a fan of Shah Rukh Khan. I used to think if a person doesn’t have even 5% of SRK’s charm, then he doesn’t deserve to live. I was such a hardcore fan.” That’s what pushed him to move to Mumbai.

As for Tumbbad, Shah revealed exciting news about the sequel. The re-release of Tumbbad is intended to give the film the commercial success it didn’t receive upon its original release in 2018. Shah also teased details about Tumbbad 2, promising it will introduce a new dimension to the story.
“We have spent six years on this sequel. It will present a different story while continuing from where the first part left off. The sequel will explore the concept of immortality through Pandurang, the son of Vinayak Rao,”
Shah explained. He mentioned that while the first film dealt with greed, the sequel will delve into another negative aspect of human nature.
In addition to Tumbbad 2, Shah is working on a new fantasy film titled Santosh Lakshmi. He hinted that this project will surpass Tumbbad in scale and ambition, featuring thrilling elements such as trains travelling inside mountain caves.
