Chhaava Lezim Controversy

While Chhaava is gaining attention with its promotional efforts, it recently found itself caught in controversy. A particular scene featuring Sambhaji Maharaj (played by Vicky) and Rani Yesubai (played by Rashmika Mandanna) performing a lezim dance sparked a backlash from certain political groups and followers of the Maratha warrior-king. Many felt that the portrayal was historically inaccurate and inappropriate.

Addressing the concerns, Vicky clarified that the film was made with the utmost respect for history and culture. He mentioned that every day on set started with Shivgarjana slogans to honour Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s courage. He also explained that the lezim sequence lasted just 20-30 seconds and was meant to highlight cultural traditions on a global stage.

He further stated that Sambhaji Maharaj was a ruler who deeply connected with his people, and if someone had invited him to join in a dance, he would have likely obliged. However, since some followers found the scene unsettling, the makers decided to remove it as it was not crucial to the film’s storyline.

Chhaava is all set to hit theatres worldwide on Feb 14.
