Vidya Balan is stepping into a significant new collaboration, one that brings her back to R. Balki after nearly two decades. The actor has begun work on a new Tamil film with the filmmaker, marking their first project together since Paa in 2009.
The announcement came from Vidya’s Instagram Stories, where she shared a picture of herself holding a script, dressed in spectacles and a long braid. She captioned it, “New Beginnings #NewTamilFilm with #RBalki”, confirming the start of her latest film with Balki.
Vidya Balan And R. Balki Reunite After Paa
The reunion is a notable one in Vidya’s filmography. Her pairing with Balki on Paa remains one of the more distinctive collaborations of her career, and this new Tamil film brings that creative equation back into focus after 17 years. For now, the confirmed detail is simple and strong: Vidya and Balki are working together again, this time on a Tamil project.
That alone has made the film an immediate point of interest, especially with Vidya balancing work across multiple industries. A Tamil film with Balki also stands out because it places her in a fresh setting at a moment when her slate is already unusually varied.
A Busy Run With Jailer 2 And A New Comedy
The Balki project joins an eventful phase for the actor. Vidya is also part of Jailer 2, the Rajinikanth starrer directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. Sun Pictures has officially listed her among the cast, with the film scheduled to release in theatres on October 15, 2026.
She will also reunite with Akshay Kumar in an untitled comedy directed by Anees Bazmee, which also stars Raashii Khanna. That film is set for a theatrical release on December 4, 2026, giving Vidya another mainstream Hindi title alongside her high-profile Tamil outing.
Vidya Balan’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Vidya’s recent screen run reflects the range she has continued to build in this phase of her career. She was seen in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, which released on November 1, 2024, and brought her back into one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable franchises. Earlier that year, she starred in Do Aur Do Pyaar, a relationship drama released in theatres on April 19, 2024, alongside Pratik Gandhi, Ileana D’Cruz, and Sendhil Ramamurthy.
What makes her present line-up especially interesting is how sharply the projects differ from one another. Jailer 2 places her in a major Tamil big-screen spectacle led by Rajinikanth, while the Anees Bazmee comedy reunites her with Akshay Kumar in a commercial Hindi entertainer. Add to that her newly launched film with Balki, and Vidya appears to be moving through a particularly dynamic stretch, one that cuts across languages, formats, and audience expectations with ease.
