Vijay Sethupathi Confirms Next Film With Mani Ratnam And Sai Pallavi, Calls Repetition ‘death’ And Rules Out Sequels And Remakes

Vijay Sethupathi is in a no-nonsense mood about what he wants from cinema right now, and the actor is making it clear that comfort-zone choices are not on the menu. In a fresh interview, the Maharaja star not only confirmed his next collaboration with Mani Ratnam, but also delivered a personal creative manifesto: no remakes, no sequels, and nothing that feels like déjà vu.

For an actor celebrated for swerving between genres and tones, Sethupathi’s stance reads less like a soundbite and more like a career filter, especially as he lines up another film with one of Indian cinema’s most revered filmmakers.

Vijay Sethupathi Confirms Mani Ratnam Reunion With Sai Pallavi As Co-Lead

Sethupathi confirmed he is set to reunite with Mani Ratnam for a new project, marking their second collaboration after Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018). Speaking about returning to Mani Ratnam’s set, the actor said, “I’ve worked with Mani Sir before. This time we will be doing something completely different.”

In the same conversation, Sethupathi drew a hard line against repeating ideas, adding, “Repetition is death for me. I will never do a sequel or a remake.”

The yet-to-be-titled film will feature Sai Pallavi as the female lead, setting up a first-time pairing between Sethupathi and the Amaran actor. While the makers have not made an official announcement yet, the actor’s confirmation effectively locks the collaboration, with more details expected once the team formally unveils the project.

Why This Pairing Feels Like A Big Moment

Mani Ratnam and Sethupathi have both thrived on reinvention, and Sai Pallavi’s casting adds a performer known for emotional precision and unforced screen presence. With Sethupathi stressing that the film will be “completely different” from their last outing, the early promise here is of a narrative shift, not a repeat of familiar Mani Ratnam territory.

Vijay Sethupathi’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Sethupathi’s recent run has been packed with high-profile and risk-taking choices. He was last seen in Gandhi Talks, which released in theatres on January 30, 2026. Before that, he featured in Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas (2024) and headlined Maharaja (2024), continuing his streak of multi-language visibility.

On the upcoming slate, Sethupathi has confirmed a cameo in Jailer 2, saying, “I have done a cameo in Jailer 2 because I love Rajinikanth sir. To be with him, I get to learn a lot. The superstars survived in this industry for so many decades. There is so much to learn.” He also has Tamil projects in the pipeline including Train (directed by Mysskin) and Arasan, both in development with release details awaited.

Sai Pallavi, meanwhile, followed her strong 2024 theatrical run with Amaran and has a busy 2026 ahead, including the Hindi film Ek Din with Junaid Khan, slated to release on May 1, 2026. She has also been announced as part of Dhanush’s D55, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy.
