Vinod Kapri’s Pyre Locks October 23, 2026 Theatrical Release After A Strong Festival Run

Vinod Kapri’s Pyre is now headed for Indian theatres on October 23, 2026, bringing with it the kind of festival momentum most independent films spend years chasing. Set in the Kumaon Himalayas and anchored by two first-time actors in their 70s and 80s, the film arrives as an intimate love story shaped by migration, memory and old age, rather than conventional dramatic excess.

Kapri’s latest feature follows an ageing couple living in a remote mountain village, their days tied to their home and to the quiet hope of hearing from children who have moved away in search of better lives. That emotional premise has already helped Pyre build an international profile well before its commercial release.

The October 23 Release Is Now Confirmed

The film is produced by Vinod Kapri, Suresh Joshi and Arindra Rai Chaudhuri under Bhagirathi Films and Mashakbeen Studios. Its nationwide theatrical rollout on October 23, 2026 has been locked, with Cinépolis handling distribution.

What makes Pyre especially distinctive is its casting. The lead roles are played by Padam Singh Kapri, 80, and Heera Devi, 70, both from Uttarakhand and both facing the camera for the first time. Padam Singh is a retired Army man, while Heera Devi is a widow, homemaker and former dancer. Their lived experience appears central to the film’s emotional design, especially since the story leans heavily on silence, routine and companionship.

Vinod Kapri On Why The Film Needed Non Actors

Kapri has made it clear that authenticity sat at the heart of the film from the beginning. Speaking about the project, he said, “ Pyre is ultimately a film about love, between two people who have spent their lives together, and between parents and their children. I wanted to tell this story through two people who had lived that life themselves. Finding Padam Singh ji and Heera Devi ji was extraordinary. Their relationship, silences and emotions brought a truth to the screen that conventional actors could never have recreated.”

That creative choice also fits the film’s setting. Shot entirely in the mountains of Uttarakhand, Pyre frames a deeply personal story against the vastness of the Himalayas, while staying focused on the emotional cost of migration within families.

Festival Run And Film Details

Before its theatrical release, Pyre premiered at the 28th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, where it won the PÖFF Best Film Audience Award. It later travelled to festivals including São Paulo, Cambridge, Bath, Fajr and the International Film Festival of Kerala.

The film is written and directed by Kapri and features music by Academy Award-winning composer Mychael Danna, with lyrics by Gulzar. Positioned as a Hindi-Kumaoni drama, Pyre centres on an elderly couple navigating separation from their children, with the Himalayas serving less as spectacle and more as an extension of their loneliness and endurance.
