Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s upcoming film, The Bengal Files, is already at the center of a political storm as members of Mamata Banerjee’s TMC have filed multiple FIRs against the makers.
The battle lines have been drawn weeks before its release. Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, known for his politically charged cinema, is once again in the eye of a storm. While Agnihotri is on a multi-city U.S. tour for his highly anticipated film, The Bengal Files, a major controversy has erupted back in West Bengal. Multiple FIRs have been filed against the film and its makers – Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, Pallavi Joshi, and Abhishek Agarwal – by members of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The film, set to release on September 5, 2025, is already living up to the divisive reputation of its predecessors.
The Allegations And The Controversial Teaser
The catalyst for the legal action is the recently released teaser for The Bengal Files, which quickly became a talking point nationwide. According to the FIRs, members of the TMC allege that the teaser is designed to spread communal hate. The complaint specifically points to a visual showing a burning idol of Goddess Durga, which they claim is a “deliberate and palpable abuse of tradition and communal harmony in Bengal.”
The complaint also warns that the teaser’s content could potentially trigger public unrest and disturb the peace in the state. This pre-emptive legal strike highlights the anxiety surrounding the film’s narrative, which, true to Agnihotri’s signature style, promises to unearth hidden truths.
Makers Yet To Respond Amidst U.S. Tour
As of now, the makers of The Bengal Files have not issued an official response to the FIRs. Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and Pallavi Joshi are currently in the middle of an extensive U.S. tour that began on July 19 and is set to conclude on August 10. While a formal response is awaited, the film’s creators have previously maintained that their work is rooted in extensive research.
This isn’t the first time an Agnihotri film has faced intense scrutiny. His previous venture, The Kashmir Files, was a monumental box office success that ignited a fierce national debate, proving his films don’t just entertain – they force a conversation.
