‘We Were Down Rs. 15-20 Crore,’ Reveals Karan Johar On Losing Money In Varun, Sidharth, Alia Starrer Student Of The Year Despite Being Hit

He talked about costs involved in promotions and other activities were difficult to recover.

Student Of The Year (SOTY) starring Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sidharth completed a decade recently and the trio received a special note from producer Karan Johar. They also made their debut with SOTY in 2012 and made remarkable appearances with their spectacular acting skills loved by moviegoers over the decade. It received Rs 110 cr at the Box-office and was reportedly made with a budget of Rs 59 cr.

The latest bollywood news is that while speaking to Masters’ Union’s Business Of Bollywood podcast, Karan revealed  SOTY didn’t do well economically and he lost 15-20 cr. He talked about costs involved in promotions and other activities were difficult to recover.

“I had spent like crazy on that film. We were down Rs. 15-20 crore on that film.” The filmmaker was sure about the actors will flourish in their careers. Dharma Productions had signed three-film contracts with each star. He said that after Hasee Toh Phasee, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and 2 States, the budgets were “at subsidized numbers because that was as our contract so eventually that shortfall actually got covered. Sometimes there are movies that do really well in terms of perception but they haven’t done well economically.”
