Aamir Khan’s much-awaited production Lahore 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and starring Sunny Deol, has been creating a buzz since it was announced last year. Touted as a powerful period drama set during the traumatic Partition of India, the film was expected to be one of the most significant releases of 2025. However, fresh reports suggest the release timeline could be affected due to the current climate of heightened Indo-Pak tensions.
Lahore 1947 Rooted in Partition’s Painful History
Produced under Aamir Khan Productions, Lahore 1947 is based on a script by Asghar Wajahat that delves into the emotional and violent upheavals surrounding India’s division in 1947. Sunny Deol’s casting in a role navigating this charged historical backdrop had sparked excitement, especially with the actor’s past success in patriotic and action-oriented films.
The film marks a major collaboration between Aamir Khan and director Rajkumar Santoshi after decades, as Santoshi previously worked with Sunny Deol on hits like Ghayal and Damini. Shooting began in late 2023 and wrapped up earlier this year, with post-production underway. Initially, industry insiders expected a late 2025 theatrical release.
Concerns Over Lahore 1947 Amid Indo-Pak Strains
A recent Bollywood Hungama report quoted a source close to the production saying, “This is not the right time to release a film named Lahore 1947 when restaurant and shop names with a Pakistani antecedent are being asked to change. Lahore 1947 would have to wait for release until the hostilities between the two countries simmer down.”
This comes after several high-profile instances in India where establishments with names linked to Pakistan faced social media outrage and calls for renaming. Industry experts suggest that releasing a film directly invoking Lahore, the cultural heart of Pakistan, could spark unnecessary controversies or public backlash in the current atmosphere.
No Official Postponement Announced by Aamir
Despite these concerns, no official statement has been issued by Aamir Khan Productions or the film’s distributors about postponing the release. Sources indicate the team is closely monitoring the situation before locking a final date. Aamir Khan himself has maintained silence on the topic so far, and there is no confirmation that the film will definitely be delayed — only that timing is under careful consideration.
If the situation between India and Pakistan stabilizes in the coming months, Lahore 1947 could still hit its intended late-2025 window. Until then, fans of Aamir Khan, Sunny Deol, and Rajkumar Santoshi will have to wait for an official update.
