‘Woke Up To AQI At 447’: Vaani Kapoor On Delhi’s ‘Severe’ Post-Diwali Air Quality

As many expected, Delhi woke up the day after Diwali to a thick, heavy layer of smog. The air quality in the city and the entire NCR region dropped to the ‘Very Poor’ category, with many areas hitting ‘Severe’ levels.

Actress Vaani Kapoor, who is currently in Delhi to celebrate the festival with her family, raised her voice about the dangerous pollution. She took to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday afternoon to share her concern about the city’s toxic air.

Vaani Kapoor’s Message

Vaani Kapoor posted a message highlighting just how bad the situation was. “Woke up to Delhi’s AQI touching 447… one of the highest in the world today,” she wrote, sharing her shock with her followers.

She didn’t just state the problem; she also shared a hope for the future. Vaani added, “Maybe next year, we find a way to celebrate without dimming the air we breathe.” Her message was a clear and gentle request for people to be more mindful of how their celebrations impact the environment and public health.

Just How Bad Is Delhi’s Air?

To put that 447 number in context, an AQI (Air Quality Index) between 0 and 50 is considered ‘Good’. An AQI between 401 and 500 is classified as ‘Severe’. The ‘Severe’ category affects even healthy people and can seriously impact those with existing lung or heart diseases.

According to the SAMEER app, several monitoring stations in Delhi recorded ‘Severe’ air quality. These included Bawana (431), Burari Crossing (404), Jahangirpuri (407), and Wazirpur (408). The situation is so bad that the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) had already imposed Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the NCR.

A ‘Mindful’ Diwali

Just a few days ago, Vaani Kapoor had spoken about her personal Diwali plans, saying she wanted a “quiet” celebration this year.

“I have planned a quiet Diwali this year with a few close people, home cooked food, and no social calendar pressure,” she had shared. She added that the best way to celebrate is to “keep it warm, kind, and mindful.” Her message about the pollution lines up perfectly with her personal wish for a more thoughtful and less harmful festival.
