What should have been a victory lap for Toxic after its big opening has quickly turned into a debate over audience sentiment. Screenshots shared widely online appear to show that the film’s visible user rating on BookMyShow is no longer being displayed, with only the “likes” count now visible on the platform. The change has intensified scrutiny around the Yash led film at a time when reactions to it are already sharply divided.
Online Backlash Intensifies
The controversy gathered momentum after social media users circulated before and after images of the ticketing app, claiming Toxic earlier carried a 5.5/10 score before the rating disappeared from view. The comparison gained traction because ratings for other current titles continued to remain visible, prompting wider discussion over the platform’s display for the film.
That conversation soon spilled into broader criticism of the film itself. Online reactions have ranged from disappointment over the final cut to comments mocking the film’s long development and reshoot history. Some viewers even suggested the film may have faced stronger embarrassment had it opened against another major release.
What makes the backlash more striking is the contrast between the online mood and the film’s immediate commercial pull.
Strong Opening, Mixed Audience Response
For all the criticism, Toxic has still posted a formidable commercial start. The film crossed Rs 100 crore on its opening day, with the Hindi version contributing Rs 55 crore, Kannada Rs 23.30 crore, Telugu Rs 16 crore, Tamil Rs 5.50 crore and Malayalam Rs 1.30 crore. With another Rs 20 crore coming from overseas markets, its worldwide gross climbed to Rs 140.75 crore.
But box office muscle has not translated into unanimous approval. The Geethu Mohandas directorial currently holds a 4.3/10 rating on IMDb and a 6/10 score on District, underlining the split between its box office draw and the audience response that followed.
The Film And Its Release Context
Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups is a period gangster drama directed by Geethu Mohandas and led by Yash, with Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria, Rukmini Vasanth and Huma Qureshi in key roles. The film arrived in theatres on August 26, 2026, after first being positioned for a March 19 release, then moving to June before finally landing in August.
During one of those release changes, Yash had shared, “While we will not be releasing on June 4 as announced earlier, we will be releasing at a later, globally aligned date. Toxic will come to theatres across the world soon.”

That long wait has made Toxic an especially telling chapter in Yash’s career. It is his first theatrical release since K.G.F: Chapter 2 in 2022, the blockbuster that expanded his reach far beyond Kannada cinema and raised the stakes for every move that followed.
