Zee Studios, the worldwide distributor of the Kangana Ranaut-starrer Thalaivii, has lodged a complaint with the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) over non-payment of a refund amounting to Rs. 6 crores. Zee Studios had released Thalaivii’s Hindi and Tamil versions in India and overseas and had requested a refund from the producers, Vibri Motion Pictures, after making losses on the advance paid.
According to Zee, Rs. 6 crores from the amount paid was not recouped. Despite repeated letters sent to Vibri Motion Pictures requesting repayment, the producers did not respond. As a result, Zee Studios decided to seek IMPPA’s intervention and is also planning to approach the courts to recover their money.
Thalaivii, which also starred Arvind Swamy, Bhagyashree, and Raj Arjun, is a biopic inspired by the life of the actress-turned-politician J Jayalalithaa. Directed by A L Vijay, it was released on September 10, 2021, when cinemas were fully open across the country due to pandemic restrictions. However, the producers’ decision to release the film on Netflix two weeks after its theatrical release led to multiplexes boycotting the film, resulting in disastrous collections.
The film’s opening day collections were just Rs. 32 lakhs, and its lifetime collections were less than Rs. 2 crores. Overseas collections were also poor, while the Tamil and Telugu versions collected around Rs. 5.75 crores. Despite its release almost six months ago, Thalaivii continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons.
