Jaane Jaan Movie Review: Jaideep Ahlawat Steals The Show, Kareena Kapoor Is Effortless In This Half-Baked Thriller Directed By Sujoy Ghosh

Jaane Jaan, is a Hindi-language mystery thriller film written and directed by Sujoy Ghosh released today on Netflix. The film is an adaptation of the 2005 Japanese novel “The Devotion of Suspect X” by Keigo Higashino. Set in Kalimpong, when a single mother is caught in a crime investigation, her neighbor, a gifted math teacher, offers to help, and a relentless cop digs into the case.

Jaane Jaan Review: Plot

The crime drama follows the story of a single mother Maya D’Souza (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and her daughter Tara (Naisha Khanna). They moved to Kalimpong in West Bengal years ago and run a cafe. On one fateful night, while she is trying to cover up the murder of her estranged husband Ajit Mhatre (Saurabh Sachdeva), she encounters her gifted but awkward neighbour, Naren aka Teacher (Jaideep Ahlawat), who readily comes on board to help her for motives best known to him.

Soon, a crime investigation begins and relentless cop Karan Anand (Vijay Varma) arrives on scene, who must reach the bottom of this case and uncover the truth. Even though he has just one suspect in Maya, all evidences are in her favour, so no arrest can be made.  The intrigue lies not in identifying the killer but in discovering how the culprit outsmarts the cops.

Jaane Jaan Review: Performances

The ace performers bring their A-game forward and manage to keep you hooked to the screen. Jaideep Ahlawat is phenomenal as a socially awkward genius and a man madly in love. His character development deserves special mention, and Jaideep handles it with aplomb. His nuanced performance adds an extra layer of intrigue to the film.

Kareena Kapoor owns every scene she appears in and excels even when her emotions transition from fear, mild annoyance, rage to awkwardness. She has successfully conveyed a wide range of emotions, bringing depth to her character. Her portrayal of a woman caught in a web of crime and deceit is both convincing and compelling.

Vijay Varma plays the role of a brilliant and dogged Inspector. Known for his versatile acting skills, hehas once again proved his mettle in “Jaane Jaan”.

Jaane Jaan: Analysis

The film explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the fine line between devotion and obsession. However, although the plot twists are executed well, the film has flaws at writing level; for example, Karan suspects Maya too quickly, gets some clues easily, and leaves some things unanswered. The movie also comes off as exciting but just when you expect a twist, the excitement wades off, making the writing look half-baked.

The film has been shot with utmost precision and determination. The direction is a classic Sujoy Ghosh style, playing with the shady color palette intelligently and setting just the right flavor for the storyline. The frames of the film are perfect.

Sujoy Ghosh and cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay, known for “Sardar Udham”, brilliantly craft an atmospheric mood with rolling fog and stylized lighting to adeptly capture the gloomy climes of Kalimpong. The production design contributes significantly to the film’s melancholic, enigmatic, and contemplative atmosphere.

Jaane Jaan: Verdict

Sujoy Ghosh, the mastermind behind the cult thriller “Kahaani” starring Vidya Balan, has set a high bar for himself in Indian cinema. However, his recent endeavors like “Typewriter” and “Kahaani 2” seem to grapple with living up to that legacy. Despite adapting from an engaging, intriguing and fast-paced book, his latest film comes across as disjointed and lacking closure and depth.

The characters in the film are intricately designed with multiple shades, yet their arcs feel unfinished. The commendable acting performances are overshadowed by a narrative that doesn’t quite match up to the anticipation set by its trailer or the book’s inherent momentum. The film promises an enthralling journey filled with intricate plots and character nuances as it progresses, but it unfortunately fizzles out as it approaches its climax.

Among the standout performances is Jaideep Ahlawat, who brilliantly portrays a socially awkward genius consumed by love. Kareena Kapoor, on the other hand, is a force to be reckoned with in every scene, effortlessly transitioning between a spectrum of emotions. However, despite these stellar performances and the film’s gripping ambiance, the climax leaves viewers with a sense of emptiness. The unexpected turn in the narrative feels more like a dramatic ploy than a genuine twist, making the audience feel more misled than delightfully caught off guard.
